British TV/General Discussion

The mother died in the Belgian version, guess De LaTour wouldn't have it!

Dee, that's a big change in storyline in the Miller version of Professor T! I thought the ending of the original was spot on - it tied up the story and was the right point to put it to bed. Seems with the UK version they don't want to end what they feel is a popular show so they are going to draw it out - I hope they don't go the route that they did with "Doc Martin" - although I did enjoy the last season, it had gone so far down in quality over the years that it had become a shadow of its' former self.

Just found a new series (to me) to watch on BBC America "My Life is Murder" an Acorn program. They are running S2 so that is what I started with. Gotta say, Australia looks great - the series shows it off so well. BBC America is also airing the second season of "Signora Volpe Mysteries" - I watched the first season when Prime ran it as a monthly special a while back and liked it, so I hope the second season is as good.

Anyone who has access to Xfinity TV, they are steaming MHz for free from August 5 to August 11th. This gives access to all of MHz's inventory of series. I will be catching up with many of my favorites...so much to choose from - it will be an episode here, an episode there - so much fun to be able to rewatch one of the best era's of TV viewing for me. It was so great when MHz was publicly viewed on local PBS channels. Sunday nights were outstanding in those days.

Solar, I plan on rewatching "Magpie Murders" again and look forward to "Moonflower Murders". They will take us in to late October when "The Marlow Murder Club" will air. Not a bad few months of programming!

Been watching the first season of "Cobra", I have the last episode in the DVR waiting for me. I was quite surprised at first, the storyline was very different than I imagined - I don't know what I was expecting, but it was not quite the explosion that the story started with (and has never let up on).

I am also DVRing the third season of "Hotel Portofino". From what I am reading this latest season is getting mixed reviews, I'll soon find out what camp I fall in to.

Like this show Brit ....  enjoy the beautiful Italian seacoast ...  (  the way that Hotel is set beside the sea )  while watching  late 1920's Italy  become immersed more and more in  Fascism  ...  wonder what Bella will be up to tonight .  Wonder how long  she and family will be able to keep  the Hotel  given the politics at the time .

Brit, quite true on Doc Martin, Penhale was a clown most times until they decided to make him a police officer. Is Signora Volpe Italian? Emilia Fox was the ME in Silent Witness, which vacillated in quality. Should I watch?

Hotel Portofino wasn't bad, but I much preferred Seaside Hotel. The Nazis figured heavily in the last few seasons.

Me too Solar, love seeing the Italian coast line and the beautiful hotel... there is something about the time period of the 20's that I gravitate to. "My people", the Murphys, albeit located in the South of France, were in their prime (and element) in the 20's and early 30's. That, I think, is why I have such an affinity for this period.

I understand that the politics of the time, with the continued growth of fascism, takes on an even larger role in the 3rd season which made some watchers uncomfortable; while others embraced it as a realistic depiction of what was really happening in Italy during this period.

Bella is a such an interesting character - she is what originally drew me to the series (besides the beauty of the landscape) and what keeps me coming back.

Deedee, Signora Volpe is not Italian although filmed in Italy. I am not sure if you would like it, I did enjoy the first season and I would say because it was a bit different - ex British spy travels to Italy only to find herself playing detective not because she wants to, but more because her skills lead her in this direction. If you like Emilia Fox, you probably will enjoy it. The Italian scenery (again) is a definite draw.

I have to agree with you, of the two series, I would have to say Seaside Hotel is the better. You and I have to find a place like that to summer - a week would be just fine (although back in the day people stayed for weeks on end).

Easy, flowing days of good food, lovely surrounds and a beautiful beach. We could while away the hours in peace... chatting, walking to the water, enjoying an aperitif and nibbles in the afternoon and a long and delightful dinner with friendly banter and comradery (And, a great desert to end it) in the evening. Solar and Appara are you in? 😊

Just want to mention I found out today that my local PBS station is also airing "My Life is Murder" and they are starting with the first season. So if anyone is interested also look there for the series.

Brit, oh boy, wouldn't that be lovely. But Somewhere in Time (remember that lovely movie), not now.

I had such hopes for The Responder and Hope Street. Meh to both. I'll have to check in on My Life Is Murder and Signora Volpe. Thanks.

Count me in BRIT ....  would love  to spend a leisurely  3  weeks  or so at that beautiful hotel .  Either place would be fine .  Pity about  Seaside Hotel  ,   would  ordinarily  love  such a show  if it weren't  for those  $#@$  subtitles .  lol

Been  watching   ' Baby  Reindeer  '  (  Netflix  )    only because  of the lawsuit  filed against  Netflix  by  the person who is portrayed  by  actress   Jessica  Gunning .  It is a hard  watch ,  might not finish.

"Baby Reindeer"...

I heard this is a real difficult watch, Solar. I wouldn't make it through.

Finished the finale of "Grantchester", I thought it was a good episode and a solid ending to this season. Some episodes were better than others - as per usual I am wishy washy with the series, but that was a strong ending.

Deedee, I have been reading reviews of the second season of "Signora Volpe", they have not been as good as S1 unfortunately. A little disappointed reading this. If you can see the first season, I would give that a chance, you may not want to jump in to S2, I have a feeling you won't enjoy it.

Started S3 of "Hotel Portofino"... so far, I'm all in.

The finale of (S2) of "Astrid" ... superb. One of the best current series.

Enjoying Magpie  Murders  with  Atticus  Pund  and also good to see  Susan  Ryeland  even if it is a  rebroadcast .  Good warm up to  Moonflower  Murders  premiering Sept. 15  ( PBS ) .  Have watched the first Ep. so far  , might watch second Ep. tonight .

I have been out gallivanting this past weekend. Drove down to central Alberta to visit with my sister and then went on a daytrip down to southern Alberta. Stopped in every little town along the hi-way, toured some interesting museums (one of which was the Gopher museum), and doing all the touristy things in Drumheller before heading back to her house. Drumheller is in an area called The Badlands - attractions are dinosaur bones, coal mines and the Hoodoos.   and yes, I did say the Gopher museum, which is a little old house filled with stuffed gophers dressed in a variety of apparel, and posed in dioramas!  LOL

The finale of Grantchester seemed a little rushed to me. But I'm glad that the 'new guy' wasn't replaced by the 'new guy'. Sam was very intuitive and used that talent to further his circle of worshippers. He targeted Alphie as being alone and having no family - so now I'm wondering what family problems Alphie might be running from? Something to look forward to next year!

solar wrote 2 months ago: 1

Gopher  Museum ???   ...   now that sounds  interesting .   lol

appara wrote 2 months ago: 1

I didn't realize how many varieties of these little vermin Alberta is home to. These taxidermied gophers turned a dying town into a tourist attraction! They are posed in scenes from around the town - bikers, doctors, hairdressers!   Believe it or not, the map on the wall has pins from all over the world!  LOL  google Torrington museum in Alberta.

I can't believe that we are near the end of August, that is until I look around and see the leaves are starting to turn.

I just noticed that Van der Valk (I believe he is a fave of yours Soler? lol) is airing on the 15th along with Moonflower! Not that I dislike watching new content, but it makes for such a long gap before the Marlow Murder Club!

appara  ..  Can't believe that  Labor Day Weekend is upon us.  Remember when you were a kid , getting out of school in  June  , the summer seemed to go on for ever.  Now , it seems it's so short once ya grow up.  lol    Have enjoyed  Magpie Murders  the second time around  and only wish  Moonflower   and  Valk were not on the same night .  Like ta see them spread out  more .  As for  Van der Valk ...   I can watch the series  but there is just something about his looks ..  i just picture him in an  Elf  costume  and I just can't take him serious  but the series is good.   lol

Hmmm,  Brit seems to be MIA, I hope all is well in her world!!

My friend and I have our last camping trip booked from Tuesday to Saturday, here's hoping for some nice, warm daytime weather!! and calm nights so that we can have a campfire!!  Not much happening on my TV for the next little while, I think the first to return is Sept12th - The Old Man, season2 on FX.

solar wrote a month ago: 1

appara  ....    Just had  a couple of Eps.  of  The Old Man  drop into  PVR  ,   S2 E1 ( VIII ) and  S2 E2 ( IX )  ..   watched   ( VIII )  last  night  ..   not bad .  Will watch  ( IX )  tonight .   Season  3  has not been confirmed  yet  but  enjoy   S2  that is out now.    Jeff  Bridges  and  John  Lithgow   work  well  together.

Hi all.

Those with Acorn, have you seen Bäckström, the Swedish TV series?I found it excellent.

Brit, are you okay???

Hi everyone. I am fine and my sister is doing well. Thank God for that.

The Hubs and I have had a devastating loss, our sweet cat daughter Isabelle unexpectedly passed away a few weeks ago. We never saw it coming. She died one month from the day we took her to the vet because she started having a problem holding down her food. She showed no sign of illness before that. My sister was visiting with us for six weeks, she was eating up a storm, living her life, and two days after my sister went back home it started. We got her right to the vets and let me tell you, her vets let us down, they did not take her illness seriously even though we kept telling them that something was terribly wrong. No one was listening to us, too busy moving on the next patient.

I never left her side for that month, did everything in my power to keep her going, begged for strong steroid to treat her (which they did give me, I had to come up with a treatment plan myself, which I did through a lot of research), but she wasn't responding to it as she should have. I took her to the oncologist on staff (one of the vet techs suggested it as she could see our own vet was not paying the attention she should) who told us not to worry a change of meds is all that was needed...... she died a few days later at home with me.

We now think it was an aggressive cancer in her intestines. We also know that with the correct diagnosis we may not have been able to stop it, but her life would have been more comfortable and she may have been with us for a bit longer.

The veterinary business has become nothing more than a money making operation, it is all about getting you in and out of the office as quickly as possible and on to the next patient. If you have a seriously ill pet you are in trouble.

Our Isabelle was an incredibly loving being, a joy to us every moment of her life and the heart of our home. Losing her has hit me to the core - I don't understand why we had to lose her this young, she was only twelve, and I don't think I will ever get passed it.

She had a big, happy life - she was the toast of the neighborhood - her father walked her every morning (on a leash) before he went to work and she had a group of admirers that would stop and visit with her while out for their morning walk. We showered (her back) with the love she gave us and at least we know in our hearts that we gave her the very best life possible.

Two days after she died we took Miss Buddy to a vet specialist at a hospital near us because she has been having eye issues. I had her back and forth to her vet and was not getting any satisfactory responses - he was clueless and I now trust no one.

Come to find out, Miss B. has a large tumor that is obstructing her heart. This vet knew it the minute she saw her eyes. I was beside myself, as it seemed we were going to lose her too. I tell you it has been a hard, hard month. I am exhausted and hitting ground, but I learned a lot from our experience with Isabelle and we are moving forward aggressively.

We have two doctors from the hospital we are working with and they are cutting edge with their approach to her care. In just a week we have seen improvement in her, she seems to be doing well on the steroids (unlike poor Isabelle) she is eating up a storm, they have her on meds to help her immune system, Omega vitamins for her joints, pain meds to deal with her arthritis and we will be adding in CBD drops for inflammation and pain once she stops with the immune meds.

We don't know how long we have with her, but her quality of life is where it should be. If we can get the tumour reduced, she even has the ability to keep going for a while. There are no guarantees, as none of us have a crystal ball, but seeing her doing well is making my heart swell.

I have missed you all very much. Thank you for thinking of me - Solar sent me an email the other day and jolted me out of my stupor of grief. You guys (you can tell I am originally from NY!) have been my life line through so much and just knowing you are there makes all the difference.

We have some good programing coming up right around the corner and I will be back to chime in!

Oh Brit, I'm so so sorry (I don't think I have your correct email). A neighbor's dog, up in years, went that same way, and it was also cancer.

I feared for Miss Buddy and I am glad to hear your vet is working with you. We just switched hub's doctor because his original cardiologist was doing nothing about some serious meds they had given him. You are correct, they are all, human and pet, in the medical profession about the money.

If you find a good one, hang on for dear life.

Isabelle will be in your heart for a long long time, and I am always reminded of what George Carlin said about pets, they are little tragedies.

Be well, my friend, and I am glad to see you here.
