Question about Main Cast for anime

MAT13 posted 4 days ago

Hi Tom,

I feel a bit uneasy about going on to changing all anime characters to main cast simply because all characters are credited at the same place at the end of each episode without listing which is main and which is guest. It is not that I don't trust you, but I've never ran into any anime that had all cast put into main (like you showed me the case with The Simpsons), so this isn't something I need to check with others, right? This, allow me to call is "strange" policy of treating everyone as main cast, is something all the top officials here agree with and there are no exceptions like when shows don't bother to separate them even though it is clear to anyone that putting some random character as main, along with Luffy or Naruto doesn't make sense. I don't need to verify this with others, right? Because this is a big undertake and don't wanna start changing something only to find out that I shouldn't have after all.

It can be very difficult (as in time-consuming) to add main cast when there are 100s or 1000s of characters for every episode. Not to mention, adding each new character, first under main cast, then being able to select it. Did you, or any other of you top officials add some any without adding anyone as guest cast? I've fixed this with a few shorter anime and some western cartoons like original He-Man, but just want to be certain it is okay to be doing it this way even if in my 5 years here I haven't ran into such case with any anime. Sorry for double-checking this, but I really just want to be sure not to make any mistake.

Kind regards!

No you dont need to check something thats policy, that ive linked you too, no. If it makes you feel better though and any "top officials" would like to back me up. @RoseRed , @Aidan , @MTQueenie , @WatchingTV, @LadyShelley

Just checking you have read the policy too? We do only do this if their is no official source telling us any different, i did mention that at the same time I linked policy to you.

WatchingTV posted 4 days ago

I am not really involved in anime or any animation in general, but based on the policy quoted below I tend to agree with Tom's opinion here, though I understand it can become a tedious process in the long run if a main cast plays a significant amount of different roles.

Many animations have the role 'Additional Voices' listed separately from the rest of the cast. If this is the case, each actor needs their own 'Additional Voice' character and this should always be credited as a co-starring role. If a main cast actor appears as 'Additional Voices' and their name only appears as a main cast member, they should have a main cast 'Additional Voice' character added, if not they should be treated the same as any other guest characters with the same role. Each actor should only ever have one 'Additional Voice' character throughout their time on the show. (for example Billy West in Futurama)

In most circumstances, voice actors are credited based on their standing within the realm of their work and as such some actors only playing small roles will always be credited as show stars regardless of which show they appear in or how often. That being said, some major voice actors will sometimes only appear as 'Additional Voices' or as guest stars.

I don't really watch anime but yes if the credits on-screen doesn't differentiate between main and guest cast then everyone would be main cast unless the official site or a press release indicates clearly which is main cast. Doesn't the official site list those they consider to be main cast even if the credits dont?

LadyShelley posted 4 days ago

This is why the animation policy is different from live-action shows. The credits do not follow the usual standard. Tom is correct in how animation shows should be edited.

MAT13 posted 4 days ago

@MTQueenie

Thank you all. I think I've been given similar or same answer and before, and that is...

"...everyone would be main cast unless the official site or a press release indicates clearly which is main cast."

...which means official site info trumps how the credits are displayed. The thing is, official sites for anime list main characters, they most obviously never list some side character that appear in episode 748 and says nothing but "Hello there!". But does listing main characters on official site indicate that only these are main characters?

Official sites often have "Characters" link where they list characters, they don't have "Main Characters" and "Other Characters".

Let's check some concrete example, for example, for Meitantei Conan -- https://www.ytv.co.jp/conan/character/

You can see on character page there isn't every single random character that appears in individual episodes. They listed characters (even test saying "全キャラクター" means "all characters"), but that is far from all. What they listed are characters of importance, and they are all characters that appear in cannon manga episodes. There's not a single character from filler episodes.

Let's take an example of Shielf Hero anime -- https://shieldhero-anime.jp/ (click on "Characters" link)

Here we can see there are 16 characters on this site. For anyone who watched this show and all its seasons, they will know that first three characters are undoubtedly true main characters. Here they included more that are dominant, meaning 16, but in the TV series there are far more that are credited together.

But what about Wind Breaker anime -- https://wb-anime.net/

Here, there is actual list under "Cast" which lists 21 voice-actors and characters, as well as "Character" section which lists also 21 characters. So does that mean these are only main characters?

As you can see, official anime websites always list characters, and they always list them under "Characters" and in that single list it's usually main + dominant recurring characters, but they never explicitly state it. In the show credits, these, along with any other minor roles are all credited together, and they are just listed under "Cast" (not explicitly ever stating "main" or "guest" either).

So does this qualify for the fact where "official site or press release indicate clearly which is main cast"?

Which should I follow, web sites like these, or credits?

TomSouthwell posted 4 days ago

As per policy. You'd follow the official websites in all these instances.

MAT13 posted 4 days ago

Okay, got it. So characters they decide to list I should consider main cast. All the rest I should think of as guest cast.

Good, then anime won't have the problem of treating everyone as main cast... at least not the anime that have web sites. Thanks.

Splinter Cell guest cast

MAT13 posted 19 days ago

Hi Tom,

regarding Splinter Cell animated series: https://www.tvmaze.com/shows/49424/tom-clancys-splinter-cell-deathwatch

You've added all the guest cast from the entire series and to each and every episode. Perhaps Netflix simply uses overall credits and attach them at the end of each episode, but this is very misleading and incorrect. Most of the guest cast appear in 1 or 2 episodes, except some more prominent figures. For minor roles like "Goons" tt may be very difficult to know who appeared in which episode, but if you were going to list all for every episode, perhaps "Credits Only" option would've been easier. Just letting you know about it if you ever decide to do something about this, because it'd be better if there are no guest cast at all, then listing so many that literally do no appear in the episodes, imho.

Cheers!

As per our policies I added credits based on-screen. Each episodes credits were checked and verified. If you watch the show (I havent) and need to move anyone to credits only - go ahead. Its not something Im interested in watching.

Corriedale

PrinceofNorth posted 19 days ago

Hello Tom,

I hope you are well. I am reaching out to you for some help. You are already familiar with Corriedale, a crossover between Corrie and Emmerdale. It was recently confirmed that this event will air on Monday January 5th on 8pm as confirmed by ITV:

The hour long Corriedale episode will air at 8pm on January 5th - it will not be dropped earlier in the day on ITVX. Half hour episodes of each soap will be shown earlier, Emmerdale 7pm and Coronation Street 7.30pm, these two episodes will drop on ITVX at 7am that morning.

What I want to ask you is how will this episode be included in the episode list of both the soaps? Since it is a hour long crossover, will it be counted as a Significant Special? If so, which soap will it be included in or should be it included on both?

Thanks,
Prince

TomSouthwell posted 19 days ago

Going to tag @TonyMayhew in here as we discussed previously but I cant honestly remember how we said we would include it. I think we'd go with the show that typically airs first on the schedule, we could then use a eisode note to link the crossover episode on both guides. In that case it would be Emmerdale rather then Corrie.

TonyMayhew posted 19 days ago

Yes, it can only be added to one guide, as listing the episode on both shows would cause a schedule conflict.
The only other option to list them on both guides is to add it as normal to Emmerdale, and then also add it to Corrie without a time slot (With an episode note) so that a schedule conflict wouldn't appear.

I'm open to you listing it as you see fit, so I'll leave it in your hands :)

PrinceofNorth posted 18 days ago

I suppose since it will be a one off special, it cannot have a seperate show of its own within the franchise. I like the idea of adding as a special to Emmerdale and then adding it Corrie list without a airdate.

TomSouthwell posted 18 days ago

If another episode is commissioned we would definitely move it to its own guide but we are both happy for you to decide how it's added :).

PrinceofNorth posted 18 days ago

You guys have been here far longer than I have, so you’re the experts. That said, I would love to see this crossover made viewable on both the soaps’ pages, to truly showcase what a historic event in soap opera history it is.

Thanks :)

TomSouthwell posted 18 days ago

Go for both but I would say so we aren't duplicating credits add all stars as stars to that Emmerdale episode (the one on the schedule) and we will make sure episode notes are added to link people between guides and episodes etc.

PrinceofNorth posted 18 days ago

I have created the episode in the Emmerdale lis and added Emmerdale cast members, Should I add Corrie's cast as guest row or I should also add them to main list?

TomSouthwell posted 18 days ago

Main cast please as thats what they are on either show.

TomSouthwell posted 15 days ago

@PrinceofNorth I think the show can actually have its own guide - today a insignificant special 'Countdown to Corriedale' got released on YouTube. This would qualify it as having multiple episodes and would solve all issues re: Scheduling and Cast.

PrinceofNorth posted 15 days ago

I am happy with the a separate entry for this event. It will surely with all the issues. I think you should go ahead and create a new guide for Corriedale.

TomSouthwell posted 15 days ago

I haven't added anything but the show as Im about to head to work- are you okay filling in the rest please

https://www.tvmaze.com/shows/89156/corriedale

PrinceofNorth posted 15 days ago

Yes, I will fill in the rest. Thank You :)

PrinceofNorth posted 15 days ago

I think I have added all the necessary things and whenever you are free, please delete the Corriedale special from Emmerdale list and also remove all the Corrie cast members that I have added or that special. Thank You :)

Countdown season 91/92?

Danny05Morrd posted a month ago

Hi Tom,

I am looking to work on the Countdown page, getting all episodes in with correct cast etc.

Watching yesterday's episode the host mentions they are currently in Season 92, but the current one on here is Season 93. I think Season 91 has been split into two seasons on here.

I am happy to merge those two seasons back into one but I just thought I'd check if there was a reason you created this split, as I know the policies on here can be different to other sources.

Thanks,
Danny

TomSouthwell posted a month ago

Thanks for reaching out
