Categorizing Perry Mason made-for-television films

I find clubbing all the television films together as part of season 9 to be a bit weird. They are considered sequels to the original series. And they started two decades after the original series ended and continued for a decade more.

I wonder if they could be moved to their own season. Or seasons, like the Joan Hickson Miss Marple television films: https://www.tvmaze.com/shows/24151/miss-marple/episodes.

Ok, I am not familiar with the series nor the movies.

Do the movies have the same characters and do they continue the series?

Same characters. With both surviving stars reprising them. But on a different network (NBC vs CBS).

My thinking is to be a bit radical and simply move these episodes/films to a new show called 'Perry Mason Returns' (named after the first film in the series).

The last four movies that were shot after Burr's death can be their own season/arc with 'A Perry Mason Mystery' as the season title.

the movies did star Raymond Burr and Barbara Hale. William Katt replaced one of the regulars who had died in the interim. I think the opening music was the same as well, no idea about the rest of the crew. If I'm remembering the scenario right (and it's been a long time since I watched any of these) Perry is asked to come out of retirement to help Della Street (Barabara Hale) or maybe it was her son (William Katt's character)??? not sure about that. After that Perry and Della start helping other people as well. I'd say they are a continuation, so I understand why they are listed as specials.

Making up a name might not be the best idea, but reading the article a new show seems to be a good idea, will talk to the other staff about it :)

Della is accused of murder and Mason returns to defends her.

Regarding specials, this is a series of 30 related films as opposed to 30 unrelated one-offs. So, my opinion is, tagging all 30 of them as specials is a bit much.

Any name will work:

* Perry Mason (1985)

* Perry Mason TV Movies

But I think 'Returns' works better because he does return as an older version of himself after a two decade hiatus, not unlike Sherlock Holmes returning from the dead in 'The Return of Sherlock Holmes.'

If it is any help, the title card of:

* the first movie is: PERRY MASON RETURNS

* movies 2-26 is: PERRY MASON

* movies 27-30 is: A PERRY MASON MYSTERY

we will gather more opinions from the staff, this might take 1-2 days for a decision :D
