Detective Stanley Bolander (Ned Beatty) pushes his reluctant partner, John Munch (Richard Belzer), to follow up on a cold case in which a woman was run over by a car. Munch eventually elicits a confession from a drunk driver who hit her. Detective Kay Howard (Melissa Leo) continues a recent lucky streak by easily solving a murder immediately after taking it on, much to the bewilderment of her partner, Beau Felton (Daniel Baldwin). Eccentric loner Detective Frank Pembleton (Andre Braugher) is forced to partner with rookie Tim Bayliss (Kyle Secor), who disagrees with Pembleton's methods when he tricks a suspect (Alexander Chaplin) into confessing to murder. For his first case as primary investigator, Bayliss is assigned to the murder of 11-year-old Adena Watson.

Unable to find evidence against a brutal murder suspect, Howard tries to seek help from the victim's ghost. She is frustrated when her partner, Felton, mocks her superstitious beliefs, but Felton later helps her solve the murder with help from a tarot card reader. Munch and Bolander respond to the supposed death of an elderly man, only to find him still alive, much to the disappointment of the man's wife (Gwen Verdon), who is extremely unhappy with their marriage. When that same man turns up dead later, Bolander and medical examiner Carol Blythe (Wendy Hughes) debate whether it should be considered a homicide. Meanwhile, Bayliss continues his investigation into the murder of 11-year-old Adena Watson. A rookie detective on his first case, Bayliss has trouble emotionally detaching from her death, and Al "Gee" Giardello (Yaphet Kotto) demands he show more confidence. When later pressured by his superiors to take Bayliss off the case, Giardello refuses and defends the rookie detective.

When fellow officer Chris Thormann (Lee Tergesen) is shot in the line of duty, his friend Crosetti takes it personally and presses a reluctant Giardello to assign him the case. A man (Larry E. Hull) claims to have witnessed the shooting and says he will testify in court. Meanwhile, Bayliss and Pembleton continue their investigation into the murder of Adena Watson, and the two become frustrated with each other when nothing new develops. Pembleton requests a new partner, but Giardello refuses. Elsewhere, as Bolander prepares for a date with Blythe, he strikes up an unusual friendship with his neighbor (Luis Guzmán), a lonely Latino cabinetmaker who has built a coffin in his apartment. Meanwhile, Howard, Felton and Lewis uncover information that helps advance several outstanding homicide cases, including that of Calpunia Church, the elderly woman suspected of killing her husbands for insurance money.

A Shot in the Dark

Officer Thormann has a miraculous recovery and will live, but doctors say he will be blind. Crosetti is convinced they have found the shooter, but an unconvinced Lewis keeps investigating, much to Crosetti's frustration. Lewis' suspicions are later confirmed when he discovers the real shooter, and Crosetti feels guilt over letting his personal friendship with Thormann cloud his judgment. Meanwhile, Bayliss suspects Adena Watson was murdered by a local arabber, but Pembleton disagrees. Pembleton is later impressed to find the physical evidence substantiates Bayliss' theory. Bayliss' investigation is nearly thwarted when his superior, Captain George Barnfather (Clayton LeBouef), tells the press about secret evidence. Bayliss lashes out and insults Barnfather, and is later forced by Giardello to apologize. Bolander and Munch investigate a double shooting that has left a drug dealer dead, and eventually discover the shooter was the dealer's own bodyguard.

Three Men and Adena

Bayliss and Pembleton bring in arabber Risley Tucker (Moses Gunn), the prime suspect for the murder of Adena Watson. Since Tucker has already been interviewed by police multiple times, the detectives have only one more chance to get a confession before Tucker goes free. The three men spend 12 hours in the interrogation room, nicknamed "The Box", and the detectives try multiple tactics to get him to confess, from intimidation to emphathy to lying. Tucker remains adamant that he did not kill the girl, and eventually turns the table on the police by identifying their hidden insecurities. Although Tucker admits to harboring pedophilicfeelings for Adena, the interview ends without a murder confession and Tucker goes free. Bayliss now questions whether Tucker was the killer at all, but Pembleton believes he was, and expresses a new respect for his partner Bayliss.

A Dog and Pony Show

A Dog and Pony Show

Giardello orders Bayliss and Pembleton to move on from the Adena Watson murder and take on new cases. They are assigned to solve the murder of a police dog, which Bayliss finds a waste of time, but Pembleton decides to take seriously. Meanwhile, Howard and Felton are determined to bust drug dealer "Pony" Johnson (Geoffrey Ewing) for the torture and murder of a young woman, and eventually elicit a confession from another drug pusher (Larry Gilliard, Jr.) whose mother was also murdered by Johnson. Crosetti provides encouragement to a recovering Thormann, who feels he should have died in the hospital and is discouraged to learn his wife (Edie Falco) is pregnant. Bolander meets his girlfriend Blythe's outrageous teenage son (Stivi Paskoski) and, despite his best efforts, cannot bond with him. Giardello attends a retirement party of a retired fellow shift commander (Michael Constantine), who tells Giardello he was forced out of the job.

And the Rockets' Dead Glare

When a Chinese college student and political refugee is murdered, Lewis and Crosetti go to Washington, D.C. to question embassy officials, but find them completely uncooperative. Howard and Felton spend the day in court testifying against "Pony" Johnson. A nervous Howard nearly jeopardizes the case with procedural missteps, but she later recovers and helps state prosecutor Ed Danvers(Željko Ivanek) secure a guilty verdict. Afterward, Howard accepts a date offer from Danvers. Pembleton is offered a promotion to the vacant shift commander position, but is asked not to tell Giardello about it. Pembleton ultimately decides not to take it and Giardello, who learns about it on his own, is disappointed Pembleton did not confide in him. As Munch and Bolander investigate a drug-related murder, Munch argues for marijuana legalization, claiming it would reduce violent crime.

Smoke Gets in Your Eyes

Howard and Bayliss both attempt to give up smoking, which makes Felton and Pembleton fear their partners' edginess could endanger their own safety. The four nearly miss a murder suspect during a stakeout because they are consumed by a discussion about smoking. Meanwhile, Giardello uncovers a secret construction job ongoing within the police department building, which the detectives were not alerted about. Giardello is furious that it may be hazardous to his squad, and he threatens to go to the media if his superiors do not implement safeguards. Bolander and Munch investigate the death of a 14-year-old boy who has been beaten with a baseball bat. They eventually learn he was killed by a teenage gang leader (Joe Fersedi) who loved the victim like a brother, but beat him as part of an initiation. Bolander is deeply disturbed by the teen's cold casualness in discussing the murder.

This episode recounts a hot summer night in September, recalling events that occurred earlier in the chronology of the season. The squad works the night shift, but no homicides are reported, leaving the detectives to brood over their personal matters. Bayliss is still investigating the Adena Watson murder but makes no progress, prompting Pembleton to encourage him to approach it from the mind-frame of a criminal. This advice leads Bayliss to a breakthrough discovery. Meanwhile, Howard learns her brother-in-law has been cheating on her sister, and Felton surprises Howard by offering her genuine words of comfort. Bolander contemplates asking Blythe on a date and, when he finally builds up the courage, she accepts. Throughout the night, the detectives encounter several odd characters, including a criminal who dresses like Santa Claus (Cleve Wall) and a cleaning woman (N'Bushe Wright) who keeps her baby in an animal carrier while she works.

Ellison struggles with feelings of helplessness and guilt, and becomes offended by the insensitivity of the detectives investigating the case. When the seemingly good-natured 19-year-old Vaughn Perkins (Lloyd Goodman) is identified as the shooter, Howard becomes convinced he is taking the fall for his friends, and desperately tries to learn the truth while Felton closes the case.

Meanwhile, Bolander (Ned Beatty) resists new sensitivity training requirements based on his lack of trust for therapists, stemming from his failed marriage. When Pembleton (Andre Braugher) and Bayliss (Kyle Secor) investigate the killing of a drug peddler, Pembleton suspects a police shooting, which upsets Lt. Giardello (Yaphet Kotto).

As Pembleton continues his investigation into a suspected police shooting, Giardello pressures him to pursue civilian suspects. To make a point, Pembleton elicits a confession from an innocent man (Isaiah Washington), but Giardello realizes he cannot accept it. Ultimately, Giardello helps Pembleton find the real shooter, a police lieutenant (Michael S. Kennedy) with whom Howard had an affair and for whom she still harbors romantic feelings. Meanwhile, as Munch (Richard Belzer) runs into problems in his love life, the normally-lonely Bolander strikes up a relationship with a young waitress named Linda (Julianna Margulies).

Pembleton and Bayliss investigate the S&M-related murder of a young woman, which initially makes Bayliss uncomfortable, but ultimately forces him to confront his own darker side. The detectives eventually learn the woman was killed by her neighbor, who accidentally choked her to death during rough sex. In another case, Lewis and Crosetti (Jon Polito) pursue a suspect who killed a man over a $1.49 pen. Lewis is deeply shaken by the seemingly pointless motive. Meanwhile, the despairing Munch crashes the first date of Bolander and Linda, ruining their evening by venting his romantic woes, until Linda offers him words of encouragement.

The Baltimore detectives are working overtime on the Redball investigation of "Samaritan of the Year" Catharine Goodrich's murder. Meanwhile, Beau's wife kicks him out, leaving Felton to break into his own house to pick up some clothes. Exhausted by dead-end leads, Russert goes home. Felton shows up, ostensibly to give her information on a suspect, but in fact they are having an affair.

Pembleton takes over the murder investigation just as another victim is found behind a church, naked but for a pair of white gloves. Felton's wife wants Beau back.Beau confesses to Kay that he's seeing Russert. Meanwhile, serial murder groupie Frederick Fuchs tries to buy the white gloves and gives the squad a lead on the investigation. That night, two uniforms discover yet another victim outside another church.

As Pembleton digs deeper into the investigation, a witness, "Pamela" Wilgis, shows up. Pembleton knows Wilgis is the murderer, but when he confronts her with the evidence, Wilgis claims to have multiple personalities. Later, Pembleton, Giardello and Russert must stand by as Wilgis publicly confesses to the murders on television. Meanwhile, Felton decides to give his marriage a second chance, and he and Russert end their affair.

A Model Citizen: Meldrick Lewis meets his dream girl, Emma Zoole, but the spark isn't there for her. When she meets Tim Bayliss, sparks fly everywhere, including her bed- which is a coffin. Munch and Howard investigate the shooting of a teenager by his brother.The City, Pembleton and Russert are sued by Annabella Wilgis for violating her civil rights. Her action pits Pembleton and Russert against each other. When Felton goes home after work, he finds his house is empty, his wife has left him and his kids are gone.

Pembleton and Bayliss investigate the death of an elderly woman who's been decaying in her house for a month. Munch and Bolander investigate the murder of Sam Thorne, a crusader and a good friend of Giardello. Ironically, it's Gee who finds sympathy for the killer, a mentally slow teenager who has been set up. When Felton has no luck in his search for his family, he turns to Russert for comfort. Since Lewis and Bayliss are not speaking to each other, Munch desperately tries to find anyone to invest in the bar.

The squad is shocked when Detective Steve Crosetti is found dead in the bay. Bolander, the Primary on the case, thinks it's a suicide, but Crosetti's partner, Lewis, is positive Steve would never have killed himself. As Bolander tries to find the truth, Lewis interferes with the investigation, hoping the outcome of the case will be wrongful death, not suicide. As the squad prepares for Crosetti's funeral, Bayliss and Pembleton haggle over refreshments, and Munch has a close encounter with his brother. The brass tell Giardello there will be no honor guard for Crosetti. He and Russert try to appeal to the deputy commissioner, but can't even get an appointment.Pembleton, feeling he's had a falling-out with God since the Wilgis case, refuses to go to Crosetti's funeral, but finds his own way to honor the departed police officer.

When Howard and Felton are summoned to a grisly crime scene, Kay snaps and heads home to the Chesapeake Bay. Back home, she's soon investigating the murder of a local conservationist- most likely by a drunken oysterman. Howard thinks the killer might be her old flame, Chick Tawes. Howard still has feelings for Tawes, but her instincts say he's involved with the murder. Haskett's house is searched and an oyster knife and bloody shirt are found. Meanwhile, back in Baltimore, Giardello assigns Pembleton as Felton's temporary partner. To their surprise, they work well together and come to an under-standing.

It's Christmas Eve and the squad is on duty. Munch and Bolander investigate the death of Nicholas McGibney, a street-side Santa Claus. Meanwhile, Lewis and Russell spend the evening trying to find a young woman's killer, and Bayliss tries to hustle his colleagues in cards during a quiet night in the Squad Room.

Pembleton and Bayliss investigate the shooting of 13-year-old Darryl Nawls. 14 year-old Ronny Sayers confesses but thinks that since he shot the wrong kid, the shooting was accidental, like a car crash. Pembleton is incensed by his lack of remorse. Ronny tells Pembleton he'll feel safer in jail. Frank gives Ronny some advice on how to handle himself in jail, but he wonders what good it will do him. Munch and Lewis encounter nothing but problems while preparing to open the bar.

Lewis and Munch investigate the murder of a biker; Meanwhile, Pembleton is drawn into a cover-up involving Congressman Jeremy Wade. Wade claims that he was kidnapped by his aide, but Pembleton discovers that Wade is gay.Harris tells Pembleton to drop the charges. The press picks up on the deal and the Department, not wanting to appear to play favors to politicians, is pressed to go to trial to save face. Harris denies that Pembleton dropped the charges on his orders, so Pembleton turns in his badge to Giardello. Bayliss begs Pembleton to return to Homicide, but Pembleton says he is through with the force. Meanwhile, Beau hires a private investigator to find Beth and the kids.

Detective Douglas Jones, Russert's former partner, joins Homicide from Narcotics. Later, Natalie Jones is admitted to the hospital with suspicious injuries. That evening, Jones has been shot twice in the chest by Natalie. At the courthouse, Pembleton prepares to testify against James Harris and the Department. Giardello warns him not to seek revenge out of pride. He says he wants Pembleton back not because they're friends, but because Frank is a good Homicide Detective. The Waterfront Bar finally opens. Wild partying ensues.

Dressed in Kevlar vests, Felton, Howard, Bolander, Munch and uniforms descend on an apartment building with an arrest warrant for Glen Holton, a pedaphile and the alleged killer of Billy Borkin. Howard, the primary, insists on going through the door first. As they approach Apartment 201, a silhouette on the third-floor staircase raises two semi-automatic handguns and shoots. Howard, Felton and Bolander are seriously wounded.

Captain George Barnfather has Russert review Giardello's actions in the wake of the shootings. She finds that he initialed the warrant with the wrong apartment number, but she covers for him. Meanwhile, Felton decides not to try and work things out with Beth. He blames himself for Howard's being shot, since he let her though the door first. Finally, he overcomes his guilt and visits her bedside.

End Game

Barnfather gives the unit 48 hours to find the shooter. Lewis runs names of the apartment tenants through the computer and finds that Gordon Pratt, who has a record of weapons violations, lives in Apartment 201, the residence the detectives mistakenly tried to enter. Drummond, Walker, Pembleton and Bayliss search Pratt's apartment. They find teflon bullets and heavy-weather gear. Pembleton, Walker, Lewis, Munch, Bayliss and Drummond take turns interrogating Pratt. To get a confession, Pembleton gets the suspect, a racist, to lose his cool over questions of intelligence. But Pratt calms down long enough to ask for a lawyer. He is released on bond for the assault charge. Later, Bayliss responds to a call at Pratt's apartment building. He finds Pratt dead; no other police officer responded to the call.

Bayliss is met with hostility when he has to question his colleagues after Pratt is found dead and finds out no one is interested in helping him solve the case. (The episode's title is a reference to a cameo from Chris Noth as Mike Logan, his character from Law & Order.)

Both Detectives Bolander and Howard return to work on the same day. Meanwhile an elderly woman's death in a bathtub leads to a poignant conclusion on a dance floor.

Since Lewis has unsuccessfully been partnered with every member of the squad, the newbie (Kellerman) is assigned to him. Howard has made sergeant and is trying to establish her authority in the squad, but irritates her colleagues. The climax is an arrest of the groom during a wedding ceremony.

He admits he waited because he was in fear of his safety. Internal Affairs gets involved when the autopsy shows one of the boys bled to death over a period of about 20 minutes. Lewis and Kellerman are alienated over the racial issues.

Then a woman from the NSA demands Bayliss and Pembleton help her find her "friend," the purported son. The detectives are flabbergasted when someone comes in and confesses to speeding up the cancer effects with the steroids!!
