Homicide: Life on the Street - Episode Guide

Detectives Meldrick Lewis (Clark Johnson) and Steve Crosetti (Jon Polito) investigate an elderly woman named Calpurnia Church, whom they believe has murdered her husbands to collect their insurance money. Detective Stanley Bolander (Ned Beatty) pushes his reluctant partner, John Munch (Richard Belzer), to follow up on a cold case in which a woman was run over by a car. Munch eventually elicits a confession from a drunk driver who hit her. Detective Kay Howard (Melissa Leo) continues a recent lucky streak by easily solving a murder immediately after taking it on, much to the bewilderment of her partner, Beau Felton (Daniel Baldwin). Eccentric loner Detective Frank Pembleton (Andre Braugher) is forced to partner with rookie Tim Bayliss (Kyle Secor), who disagrees with Pembleton's methods when he tricks a suspect (Alexander Chaplin) into confessing to murder. For his first case as primary investigator, Bayliss is assigned to the murder of 11-year-old Adena Watson.

Unable to find evidence against a brutal murder suspect, Howard tries to seek help from the victim's ghost. She is frustrated when her partner, Felton, mocks her superstitious beliefs, but Felton later helps her solve the murder with help from a tarot card reader. Munch and Bolander respond to the supposed death of an elderly man, only to find him still alive, much to the disappointment of the man's wife (Gwen Verdon), who is extremely unhappy with their marriage. When that same man turns up dead later, Bolander and medical examiner Carol Blythe (Wendy Hughes) debate whether it should be considered a homicide. Meanwhile, Bayliss continues his investigation into the murder of 11-year-old Adena Watson. A rookie detective on his first case, Bayliss has trouble emotionally detaching from her death, and Al "Gee" Giardello (Yaphet Kotto) demands he show more confidence. When later pressured by his superiors to take Bayliss off the case, Giardello refuses and defends the rookie detective.

When fellow officer Chris Thormann (Lee Tergesen) is shot in the line of duty, his friend Crosetti takes it personally and presses a reluctant Giardello to assign him the case. A man (Larry E. Hull) claims to have witnessed the shooting and says he will testify in court. Meanwhile, Bayliss and Pembleton continue their investigation into the murder of Adena Watson, and the two become frustrated with each other when nothing new develops. Pembleton requests a new partner, but Giardello refuses. Elsewhere, as Bolander prepares for a date with Blythe, he strikes up an unusual friendship with his neighbor (Luis Guzmán), a lonely Latino cabinetmaker who has built a coffin in his apartment. Meanwhile, Howard, Felton and Lewis uncover information that helps advance several outstanding homicide cases, including that of Calpunia Church, the elderly woman suspected of killing her husbands for insurance money.

Officer Thormann has a miraculous recovery and will live, but doctors say he will be blind. Crosetti is convinced they have found the shooter, but an unconvinced Lewis keeps investigating, much to Crosetti's frustration. Lewis' suspicions are later confirmed when he discovers the real shooter, and Crosetti feels guilt over letting his personal friendship with Thormann cloud his judgment. Meanwhile, Bayliss suspects Adena Watson was murdered by a local arabber, but Pembleton disagrees. Pembleton is later impressed to find the physical evidence substantiates Bayliss' theory. Bayliss' investigation is nearly thwarted when his superior, Captain George Barnfather (Clayton LeBouef), tells the press about secret evidence. Bayliss lashes out and insults Barnfather, and is later forced by Giardello to apologize. Bolander and Munch investigate a double shooting that has left a drug dealer dead, and eventually discover the shooter was the dealer's own bodyguard.

Bayliss and Pembleton bring in arabber Risley Tucker (Moses Gunn), the prime suspect for the murder of Adena Watson. Since Tucker has already been interviewed by police multiple times, the detectives have only one more chance to get a confession before Tucker goes free. The three men spend 12 hours in the interrogation room, nicknamed "The Box", and the detectives try multiple tactics to get him to confess, from intimidation to emphathy to lying. Tucker remains adamant that he did not kill the girl, and eventually turns the table on the police by identifying their hidden insecurities. Although Tucker admits to harboring pedophilicfeelings for Adena, the interview ends without a murder confession and Tucker goes free. Bayliss now questions whether Tucker was the killer at all, but Pembleton believes he was, and expresses a new respect for his partner Bayliss.

Giardello orders Bayliss and Pembleton to move on from the Adena Watson murder and take on new cases. They are assigned to solve the murder of a police dog, which Bayliss finds a waste of time, but Pembleton decides to take seriously. Meanwhile, Howard and Felton are determined to bust drug dealer "Pony" Johnson (Geoffrey Ewing) for the torture and murder of a young woman, and eventually elicit a confession from another drug pusher (Larry Gilliard, Jr.) whose mother was also murdered by Johnson. Crosetti provides encouragement to a recovering Thormann, who feels he should have died in the hospital and is discouraged to learn his wife (Edie Falco) is pregnant. Bolander meets his girlfriend Blythe's outrageous teenage son (Stivi Paskoski) and, despite his best efforts, cannot bond with him. Giardello attends a retirement party of a retired fellow shift commander (Michael Constantine), who tells Giardello he was forced out of the job.

When a Chinese college student and political refugee is murdered, Lewis and Crosetti go to Washington, D.C. to question embassy officials, but find them completely uncooperative. Howard and Felton spend the day in court testifying against "Pony" Johnson. A nervous Howard nearly jeopardizes the case with procedural missteps, but she later recovers and helps state prosecutor Ed Danvers(Željko Ivanek) secure a guilty verdict. Afterward, Howard accepts a date offer from Danvers. Pembleton is offered a promotion to the vacant shift commander position, but is asked not to tell Giardello about it. Pembleton ultimately decides not to take it and Giardello, who learns about it on his own, is disappointed Pembleton did not confide in him. As Munch and Bolander investigate a drug-related murder, Munch argues for marijuana legalization, claiming it would reduce violent crime.

Howard and Bayliss both attempt to give up smoking, which makes Felton and Pembleton fear their partners' edginess could endanger their own safety. The four nearly miss a murder suspect during a stakeout because they are consumed by a discussion about smoking. Meanwhile, Giardello uncovers a secret construction job ongoing within the police department building, which the detectives were not alerted about. Giardello is furious that it may be hazardous to his squad, and he threatens to go to the media if his superiors do not implement safeguards. Bolander and Munch investigate the death of a 14-year-old boy who has been beaten with a baseball bat. They eventually learn he was killed by a teenage gang leader (Joe Fersedi) who loved the victim like a brother, but beat him as part of an initiation. Bolander is deeply disturbed by the teen's cold casualness in discussing the murder.

This episode recounts a hot summer night in September, recalling events that occurred earlier in the chronology of the season. The squad works the night shift, but no homicides are reported, leaving the detectives to brood over their personal matters. Bayliss is still investigating the Adena Watson murder but makes no progress, prompting Pembleton to encourage him to approach it from the mind-frame of a criminal. This advice leads Bayliss to a breakthrough discovery. Meanwhile, Howard learns her brother-in-law has been cheating on her sister, and Felton surprises Howard by offering her genuine words of comfort. Bolander contemplates asking Blythe on a date and, when he finally builds up the courage, she accepts. Throughout the night, the detectives encounter several odd characters, including a criminal who dresses like Santa Claus (Cleve Wall) and a cleaning woman (N'Bushe Wright) who keeps her baby in an animal carrier while she works.

Baltimore detectives Felton (Daniel Baldwin) and Howard (Melissa Leo) investigate the murder of a tourist who was shot to death in front of her husband Robert Ellison (Robin Williams) and their two young children. The case receives considerable attention from the press and police officials. Ellison struggles with feelings of helplessness and guilt, and becomes offended by the insensitivity of the detectives investigating the case. When the seemingly good-natured 19-year-old Vaughn Perkins (Lloyd Goodman) is identified as the shooter, Howard becomes convinced he is taking the fall for his friends, and desperately tries to learn the truth while Felton closes the case.

A friend (Michael Chaban) of Felton kills his ill father (Wilford Brimley) in an assisted suicide, and a suspicious Lewis (Clark Johnson) is assigned to the case. Felton tries to convince Lewis to dispose of evidence so his friend will go free. Lewis wrestles with his conscience, but ultimately decides to help Felton. Meanwhile, Bolander (Ned Beatty) resists new sensitivity training requirements based on his lack of trust for therapists, stemming from his failed marriage. When Pembleton (Andre Braugher) and Bayliss (Kyle Secor) investigate the killing of a drug peddler, Pembleton suspects a police shooting, which upsets Lt. Giardello (Yaphet Kotto).

As Pembleton continues his investigation into a suspected police shooting, Giardello pressures him to pursue civilian suspects. To make a point, Pembleton elicits a confession from an innocent man (Isaiah Washington), but Giardello realizes he cannot accept it. Ultimately, Giardello helps Pembleton find the real shooter, a police lieutenant (Michael S. Kennedy) with whom Howard had an affair and for whom she still harbors romantic feelings. Meanwhile, as Munch (Richard Belzer) runs into problems in his love life, the normally-lonely Bolander strikes up a relationship with a young waitress named Linda (Julianna Margulies).

Pembleton and Bayliss investigate the S&M-related murder of a young woman, which initially makes Bayliss uncomfortable, but ultimately forces him to confront his own darker side. The detectives eventually learn the woman was killed by her neighbor, who accidentally choked her to death during rough sex. In another case, Lewis and Crosetti (Jon Polito) pursue a suspect who killed a man over a $1.49 pen. Lewis is deeply shaken by the seemingly pointless motive. Meanwhile, the despairing Munch crashes the first date of Bolander and Linda, ruining their evening by venting his romantic woes, until Linda offers him words of encouragement.

The Baltimore detectives are working overtime on the Redball investigation of "Samaritan of the Year" Catharine Goodrich's murder. New Shift Commander Megan Russert heads the Redball investigation and Giardello is called in to oversee the investigation. Meanwhile, Beau's wife kicks him out, leaving Felton to break into his own house to pick up some clothes. Exhausted by dead-end leads, Russert goes home. Felton shows up, ostensibly to give her information on a suspect, but in fact they are having an affair.

Pembleton takes over the murder investigation just as another victim is found behind a church, naked but for a pair of white gloves. Felton's wife wants Beau back.Beau confesses to Kay that he's seeing Russert. Meanwhile, serial murder groupie Frederick Fuchs tries to buy the white gloves and gives the squad a lead on the investigation. That night, two uniforms discover yet another victim outside another church.

As Pembleton digs deeper into the investigation, a witness, "Pamela" Wilgis, shows up. Pembleton knows Wilgis is the murderer, but when he confronts her with the evidence, Wilgis claims to have multiple personalities. Later, Pembleton, Giardello and Russert must stand by as Wilgis publicly confesses to the murders on television. Meanwhile, Felton decides to give his marriage a second chance, and he and Russert end their affair.

A Model Citizen: Meldrick Lewis meets his dream girl, Emma Zoole, but the spark isn't there for her. When she meets Tim Bayliss, sparks fly everywhere, including her bed- which is a coffin. Munch and Howard investigate the shooting of a teenager by his brother.The City, Pembleton and Russert are sued by Annabella Wilgis for violating her civil rights. Her action pits Pembleton and Russert against each other. When Felton goes home after work, he finds his house is empty, his wife has left him and his kids are gone.

Pembleton and Bayliss investigate the death of an elderly woman who's been decaying in her house for a month. Munch and Bolander investigate the murder of Sam Thorne, a crusader and a good friend of Giardello. Ironically, it's Gee who finds sympathy for the killer, a mentally slow teenager who has been set up. When Felton has no luck in his search for his family, he turns to Russert for comfort. Since Lewis and Bayliss are not speaking to each other, Munch desperately tries to find anyone to invest in the bar.

The squad is shocked when Detective Steve Crosetti is found dead in the bay. Bolander, the Primary on the case, thinks it's a suicide, but Crosetti's partner, Lewis, is positive Steve would never have killed himself. As Bolander tries to find the truth, Lewis interferes with the investigation, hoping the outcome of the case will be wrongful death, not suicide. As the squad prepares for Crosetti's funeral, Bayliss and Pembleton haggle over refreshments, and Munch has a close encounter with his brother. The brass tell Giardello there will be no honor guard for Crosetti. He and Russert try to appeal to the deputy commissioner, but can't even get an appointment.Pembleton, feeling he's had a falling-out with God since the Wilgis case, refuses to go to Crosetti's funeral, but finds his own way to honor the departed police officer.

When Howard and Felton are summoned to a grisly crime scene, Kay snaps and heads home to the Chesapeake Bay. Back home, she's soon investigating the murder of a local conservationist- most likely by a drunken oysterman. Howard thinks the killer might be her old flame, Chick Tawes. Howard still has feelings for Tawes, but her instincts say he's involved with the murder. Haskett's house is searched and an oyster knife and bloody shirt are found. Meanwhile, back in Baltimore, Giardello assigns Pembleton as Felton's temporary partner. To their surprise, they work well together and come to an under-standing.

It's Christmas Eve and the squad is on duty. Munch and Bolander investigate the death of Nicholas McGibney, a street-side Santa Claus. When they go to the victim's residence, they find his 10-year-old son, Fidel, who's waiting for his dad to come home. Meanwhile, Lewis and Russell spend the evening trying to find a young woman's killer, and Bayliss tries to hustle his colleagues in cards during a quiet night in the Squad Room.

Pembleton and Bayliss investigate the shooting of 13-year-old Darryl Nawls. 14 year-old Ronny Sayers confesses but thinks that since he shot the wrong kid, the shooting was accidental, like a car crash. Pembleton is incensed by his lack of remorse. Ronny tells Pembleton he'll feel safer in jail. Frank gives Ronny some advice on how to handle himself in jail, but he wonders what good it will do him. Munch and Lewis encounter nothing but problems while preparing to open the bar.

Lewis and Munch investigate the murder of a biker; Meanwhile, Pembleton is drawn into a cover-up involving Congressman Jeremy Wade. Wade claims that he was kidnapped by his aide, but Pembleton discovers that Wade is gay.Harris tells Pembleton to drop the charges. The press picks up on the deal and the Department, not wanting to appear to play favors to politicians, is pressed to go to trial to save face. Harris denies that Pembleton dropped the charges on his orders, so Pembleton turns in his badge to Giardello. Bayliss begs Pembleton to return to Homicide, but Pembleton says he is through with the force. Meanwhile, Beau hires a private investigator to find Beth and the kids.

Detective Douglas Jones, Russert's former partner, joins Homicide from Narcotics. Later, Natalie Jones is admitted to the hospital with suspicious injuries. That evening, Jones has been shot twice in the chest by Natalie. At the courthouse, Pembleton prepares to testify against James Harris and the Department. Giardello warns him not to seek revenge out of pride. He says he wants Pembleton back not because they're friends, but because Frank is a good Homicide Detective. The Waterfront Bar finally opens. Wild partying ensues.

Dressed in Kevlar vests, Felton, Howard, Bolander, Munch and uniforms descend on an apartment building with an arrest warrant for Glen Holton, a pedaphile and the alleged killer of Billy Borkin. Howard, the primary, insists on going through the door first. As they approach Apartment 201, a silhouette on the third-floor staircase raises two semi-automatic handguns and shoots. Howard, Felton and Bolander are seriously wounded.

Captain George Barnfather has Russert review Giardello's actions in the wake of the shootings. She finds that he initialed the warrant with the wrong apartment number, but she covers for him. Meanwhile, Felton decides not to try and work things out with Beth. He blames himself for Howard's being shot, since he let her though the door first. Finally, he overcomes his guilt and visits her bedside.

Barnfather gives the unit 48 hours to find the shooter. Lewis runs names of the apartment tenants through the computer and finds that Gordon Pratt, who has a record of weapons violations, lives in Apartment 201, the residence the detectives mistakenly tried to enter. Drummond, Walker, Pembleton and Bayliss search Pratt's apartment. They find teflon bullets and heavy-weather gear. Pembleton, Walker, Lewis, Munch, Bayliss and Drummond take turns interrogating Pratt. To get a confession, Pembleton gets the suspect, a racist, to lose his cool over questions of intelligence. But Pratt calms down long enough to ask for a lawyer. He is released on bond for the assault charge. Later, Bayliss responds to a call at Pratt's apartment building. He finds Pratt dead; no other police officer responded to the call.

Bayliss is met with hostility when he has to question his colleagues after Pratt is found dead and finds out no one is interested in helping him solve the case. (The episode's title is a reference to a cameo from Chris Noth as Mike Logan, his character from Law & Order.)

Both Detectives Bolander and Howard return to work on the same day. Kay Howard obsesses over the relocation of her desk while she was out and refuses to assist Pembleton until it has been moved back, but changes her mind after the murderer unexpectedly walks in and confesses. Meanwhile, Bolander and Munch use the "good cop/bad cop" routine to solve the brutal murder of two elderly wealthy people. Bayliss & Felton tackle the case of a skeleton found by a dog digging in a neighbor's backyard, and Lt. Gee hopes for a promotion after leaking to the press the corruption of...

On the eve of his execution, the accused's daughter takes Col. Barnfather hostage, demanding a reinvestigation of the case to save her father. Bolanger, who had originally investigated the murder, discovers links to a recent suicide. BPD races the clock to get a stay of execution. Meanwhile an elderly woman's death in a bathtub leads to a poignant conclusion on a dance floor.

When Crosetti's caseload is to be distributed among the detectives, Howard's 100% clearance rate leads Giardello to assign her his most difficult unsolved case. Her partner Felton's obsession with finding his children causes him to lose key evidence; he turns to Russert for comfort. Bayliss, Munch and Lewis close the deal on the bar only to find that their troubles are just beginning. Giardello exhibits real emotions following a rejection by a friend of Russert's.

When Bayliss' cousin shoots a "crazed" Turkish young man at his door, Pembleton and Bayliss differ on motive. A Grand Jury is called to determine whether it is manslaughter or rightful protection of the home. Was it racially motivated--that is the question. Meanwhile, attempting to increase their bar business, Munch fires the French chef and Lewis hires his grandmother as cook.

Pembleton is oblivious to being relentlessly stalked by "The Gas Man," a man he sent to jail for negligence in a gas explosion that killed a whole family. The stalker steals evidence from a gruesome crime scene--the severed head of a Gypsy fortuneteller and a bloody knife. His plan is to force Pembleton to meet him alone and exact revenge.

Pembleton and Bayliss investigate a body found at a burned building, joined by Det. Kellerman from the arson squad.

The arson-murder scenes now include two teenagers, a boy and a girl, one of whom was killed before the fire. Barnfather agrees to another detective for the Homicide Squad IF they solve the arsons, and Giardello can choose his own candidate. Kellerman turns out to be an excellent interrogator and is offered the job.

Since Lewis has unsuccessfully been partnered with every member of the squad, the newbie (Kellerman) is assigned to him. Their first case involves the shooting death of an elderly lady waiting at a bus stop. A young man has captured the shooter stashing his gun, but he has trouble getting the cops to watch the tape. Howard has made sergeant and is trying to establish her authority in the squad, but irritates her colleagues. The climax is an arrest of the groom during a wedding ceremony.

Pembleton and Bayliss work with FBI agent Steven Van Brandt to stop a killer working his way up I-95 from Florida toward Baltimore.

Pembleton and Bayliss investigate the murder of a man outside a gay night club.

Pembleton and Bayliss look for a gunman who opened fire at a crowded shopping mall, critically wounding a 10 year old boy.

A drug dealer tries to make a deal by revealing the whereabouts of a body bricked inside a wall in his basement. The stories and poems of Edgar Allen Poe figure in the solution of this 10-year-old cold case. In the meantime, Bayliss leaks the Pembleton pregnancy, and Munch betrays his latest love with her new roommate. When the cold case culprit must be released, Munch invokes "The Telltale Heart," which leads to "poetic justice."

The detectives pursue a sniper who leaves games of Hangman at every crime scene.

Another sniper strikes Baltimore as soon as the first is apprehended.

Lewis and Kellerman take a road trip to extradite a Baltimore murder suspect from Pennsylvania. It should be an easy assignment, but Meldrick and Mikey make things hard on themselves by losing the suspect on the way back.

During the investigation of a burglar found dead with no apparent injuries, the detectives find that he visited an ER for a gunshot wound and may have received bad surgery.

Briscoe and Curtis clash with Pembleton and Bayliss, who have come to New York to investigate a subway explosion resembling an unsolved bombing in Baltimore from five years ago. The investigation soon leads to a larger conspiracy.

A murdered ex-cop's son decides to conduct his own investigation when Munch and Russert find themselves stumped in their search for the killer.

The man who was acquitted of murdering a cop's father is found dead.

A male prostitute offers to reveal the identity of a multiple murderer as part of a plea bargain. He admits to luring in the victims and stealing their rings, but not to being the killer. The Homicide Squad takes turns on a stakeout next door to the suspect. Interactions between squad members and between the couple whose house they "occupy" run the gamut of emotions.

The murder of a young girl revives memories, especially in Bayliss, of an earlier case--Adena Watson, which was not resolved. Pembleton is the primary and is angered by Bayliss' interference and obsession with the old case. A reported sexual assault on a friend of the murdered girl produces a connection but no proof. Will this be another case which has no definitive answer?

The desk clerk at the New Moon Motel hears shots and calls 911. Lewis and Kellerman find the body of an ex-con wearing only one boot. The victim's classic motorcycle is missing, as is his handgun. As they interview motel residents, they find a family of illegal immigrants, a prostitute who swims in the nude, homemade drugs, wads of cash, illegal guns and uncover an unreported self-defense shooting. But what about the killer of Charlie Wells?

Two young black men are found shot to death at a project where Black Muslims have a security contract from HUD. Residents are hostile to the police initially. When one bereaved mother tells Russert that she had called 911 and half an hour passed before help arrived, they find there was a beat cop just a few blocks away. He admits he waited because he was in fear of his safety. Internal Affairs gets involved when the autopsy shows one of the boys bled to death over a period of about 20 minutes. Lewis and Kellerman are alienated over the racial issues.

The body of a 71-year-old world class swimmer is found in a pool where the ME says he was for 24 to 36 hours. A man claiming to be his biological son asks the detectives to test the corpse's blood for a DNA match. The ME discovers cancer in the corpse and massive amounts of steroids. Then a woman from the NSA demands Bayliss and Pembleton help her find her "friend," the purported son. The detectives are flabbergasted when someone comes in and confesses to speeding up the cancer effects with the steroids!!

A drug war is being fought--shipments hijacked, smalltime dealers shot, and even a family in their home are killed, leaving a small daughter hiding in a closet. Kellerman and Lewis catch the case(s) and learn a lot about the strange code of honor involved. The Narcotics detectives bring in a self-confessed killer with the murder weapon, but that's not the "whole truth."

Lewis announces to Kellerman that TODAY is his wedding day and promptly vomits. Because Lewis involves all the squad in the preparations, Giardello and Howard catch the murder of a radio talk show host, which ends with Gee's firing/killing the suspect. Munch is sure the wedding is an elaborate practical joke, but the others work frantically to get flowers, food, etc. for the nuptials. Pembleton's wife makes this day VERY memorable!

Three people are shot during a robbery at a burger place; two die, a teenage girl and a male customer. Pembleton and Bayliss investigate. They discover the other victim (shot in the knee) was the shooter's friend, and during his interrogation Pembleton has a seizure and is taken to neurosurgery. Meanwhile Lewis and Kellerman investigate "The Bowling Ball Murder"-someone dropped the ball from an overpass.

Pembleton returns to work just as a school is being taken hostage.

As the hostage situation at the school continues, the detectives debate their course of action and Pembleton experiences more problems while recovering from his stroke.

The detectives investigate a murder committed during a prison riot, while Pembleton jeopardizes his recovery as he practices for his firearms exam.

Lewis teams with a narcotics officer to catch the culprit who's selling poison-laced heroin, while Kellerman is investigated for corruption.

The arrival of a new Chief Medical Examiner upsets Bayliss at first, but results in an old case's exhumation and correct determination as a homicide. The FBI investigation of Kellerman continues, increasing his frustration. The marriages of Pembleton and Lewis are tested, but with quite different results.

An article in The Baltimore Sun about an investigation of the arson unit upsets Kellerman. Munch catches the case of a woman whose husband discovered her dead in her bedroom and immediately suspects the husband. Brodie gets an offer to stay at Kay's place.

Survivors discuss, in a grief-support group, the circumstances of three murders one Saturday night in Baltimore: a girl strangled in an alley on her 16th birthday, a mother who dies as the victim of a carjacker who drives off with her 3-year-old daughter, and a man who was attacked in the Waterfront Bar in the presence of several uncooperative witnesses. One of the cases remains unsolved.

An outstanding computer genius at a prestigious prep school is found stabbed to death. The incident is believed to be racially motivated as he is one of only three black students. Bayliss and Lewis suspect a student whose protective mother is a powerful judge. Pembleton finally passes the firearms test.

He is convinced the boyfriend did it, but Bayliss believes it was the ex-husband. Kellerman is summoned to the Grand Jury. Once again a drug murder implicates Luther Mahoney, but the star witness is intimidated even while in police custody.

A robbery gone wrong kills Danver's bride-to-be while trying on a wedding dress. Once again Pembleton and Bayliss disagree on theories of the crime. Giardello tries to help Kellerman but runs into opposition; Kellerman is "comforted" by the new ME. Danvers confronts a jailed suspect with threats which has unexpected results.

On New Year's Eve, Brodie screens his documentary about the detectives that reveals embarrassing lies and hidden truths.

A girl is found with a broken rib which punctured her lung and 26 belt buckle marks on her body. Pembleton and Bayliss question the mother and her live-in boyfriend after a social worker confirms abuse suspicions. Kellerman is exonerated by the Grand Jury but still feels tainted by suspicion. Bayliss reveals his own childhood abuse to Pembleton.

An Asian store owner, a war hero, tried to forbid dope dealers from operating outside his store. His killing leads detectives to Mahoney--again he is too "clean" to catch. Mahoney's parting shot to Kellerman throws the detective into a tailspin of depression. Lewis, his partner, follows up and tries to prevent another partner's suicide.

Pembleton and Lewis are assigned to the brutal murder of a wealthy woman. Each focuses on a different suspect: an angry talented art student from the projects and the woman's brother. A diamond ring with great sentimental value has disappeared from the victim's finger AFTER the body was found, which proves pivotal to the case.

When a police officer is found shot to death, Elizabeth Wu writes an article praising his dedication to the job. An informer calls her with a contradiction: the cop was shot when he demanded his money back in a dope deal. Her source later reveals that he was the shooter but claims self-defense. Meanwhile Kellerman's rogue brothers show up and he winds up in a jail cell with them. Lewis and Julianna to the rescue.

Two bombings near Valentine's Day result in two deaths with no apparent connections. Brodie finds a way to get a confession from a drug dealer who conned a victim into playing Russian Roulette with a fully loaded gun. The Pembletons' marriage seems to be disintegrating in spite of therapy. Lewis and Cox wait outside an office where a third bomb has been delivered.

Munch and Kellerman investigate the murder of a woman that Munch had a crush on in high school. Kellerman learns a lot about Jewish customs through the experience, and Munch has poignant reminiscences. The culprit is caught when he commits a similar offense. Pembleton begins a renewal of faith after experiencing his own vulnerability when he is mistaken about a shooting suspect.

Chris Thormann must confront the fact that the assailant who shot and blinded him is up for parole, and he might get it. Pembleton and Bayliss investigate the murder of a chef, and the family's background of abuse triggers bad memories for Bayliss.

Autopsy reveals that the death of a recent arrival from Europe was caused by a burst baggie he had swallowed, one of over 70 bags of heroin found in his stomach. Luther Mahoney MUST be involved somehow! Munch gets a tip from a con that a body is buried under the track at Pimlico, but eventually finds the "dead" man. The Mahoney problem is solved.

Just another midnight shift for the Homicide squad, with yet another shooting in West Baltimore. But this time there is a witness who is naming names. And at 4:00 a.m., why are Col. Barnfather and Capt. Gaffney taking such an active interest in the investigation?

Beau Felton's body is found. Was it suicide or murder? Was he part of a criminal operation or...? Megan Russert returns from France to help in the investigation. Pembleton discovers why Bayliss has been missing from the squad room so much.

An armed robbery at a family Vietnamese restaurant leaves five dead, sparing only two teenagers in the kitchen who implicate an off-duty Baltimore cop. Falsone confronts Kellerman and accuses him of executing Luther Mahoney.

John Lange (Vincent D'Onofrio) becomes pinned between a subway train and the station platform. The Baltimore homicide department is called to investigate whether a crime has been committed or whether the circumstances Mr. Lange finds himself in is the result of a terrible accident.

Allegations of sexual abuse complicate the case, and the unit searches for two Guatemalan refugees who were living at the rectory. The detectives find the pair and take them into custody as material witnesses, sparking an outcry from the city's Catholics, and Barnfather overrides Gee and releases them. A potential lead on a suspect dries up, and Pembleton and Stivers - who has rotated into homicide from sex crimes - are called to the scene of a second priest's murder as the refugees go missing again.

Another priest is murdered after the two Guatemalan political refugees suspected of killing the first one are set free.

An angry driver cuts off a state-owned truck, is rammed from behind and rearends a parked semi. Result? Two deaths and a paralyzed passenger, a lawsuit against the state, and pressure on the ME to alter blood alcohol results.

Bayliss and Pembleton are handed "the mother of all red-balls," the stabbing of a judge on the sidewalk in broad daylight. It doesn't take them long to connect Georgia Rae Mahoney's feckless nephew to the murder. But unlike their previous contacts with him, he doesn't go easily this time.

Bayliss exhibits a new, Buddhist-influenced philosophical attitude toward his work, and hints of relationships among the detectives begin to surface - including one between Munch and Billie Lou.

Investigation continues on the case of the newborn baby found buried behind a motel. The teen mother's parents employ a P.I. to frighten her into accusing her boyfriend. Police and prosecutors proceed to the Grand Jury, hoping to pressure one of the young parents to make a deal by letting them experience jail time. It works!

Even though the young mother of the suffocated newborn has made a deal to testify, her boyfriend is convinced she will not wrongfully accuse him--because of their love. Falcone tries to talk sense to him, but he remains convinced she will not betray him. He is shocked at the turn of events in court.

A white bus driver is beaten to death after he drives into a West Indian woman. In a nearby alley, a young black man is also found beaten to death. Racial tensions divide the Homicide squad as well as the city of Baltimore, but the true causes are not what they seem.
