Johnny is a friendly boy and although oblivious to Laura's crush on him, he certainly makes it clear that he is interested in Mary. After putting out the fire, a furious Caroline yells at her daughter and forbids her to take the exam. This is one of Melissa Gilbert's "Top Ten" episodes. She has said that the tears at the end of the episode between her and Michael Landon were real. No makeup effects were needed for this touching scene!

When a young boy named Graham Stewart arrives at school every day with various bruises, nobody has the courage to do anything -- until his alcoholic father almost kills him in a drunken rage. The Walnut Grove community is reluctant to help, but Caroline encourages them to – for the child's sake.

A college-educated farmer named Joe Coulter moves to Walnut Grove and tells the farmers of a new corn hybrid that will produce good crops, and he agrees to collect everyone's money and take a trip to purchase the corn for everyone. Charles decides to bring Caroline and the children along for a springtime trip to Mankato, but on the way back, they must seek shelter from a vicious blizzard. Today Mankato is a mid-sized city on the Laura Ingalls Wilder Memorial Highway. The highway was first designated in 1995 as U.S. Route 14 from Lake Benton in southwest Minnesota to Mankato in the south-central part of the state. Laura Ingalls Wilder historian John E. Miller wrote a fascinating book called Looking for History on Highway 14.

When the mill closes due to bankruptcy, Charles loses out on two months' worth of crucial wages that would have officially cleared his account at the Mercantile. With a large bill left unpaid, Charles takes on several odd jobs at once. Mary quits school temporarily to work overtime with seamstress Mrs. Whipple, while Laura does all the chores and assists Caroline with the crops.

Mary is excited to receive a pair of brand-new glasses, but her excitement fades when the other students relentlessly tease her, even after Miss Beadle points out her own pair of glasses. After losing badly the previous year, the team players know that they need to find a more reliable pitcher, and Mr. Mumfort's golden arm seems to be heaven-sent. Everything is going beautifully until bets are made, prompting Mr. Mumfort's no-nonsense wife to forbid him to play amidst such silly gambling.

Harriet convinces her husband to let their family go with the Ingalls. Although the two families have a difficult time adjusting to this extended period of time together, they gradually come to have a deeper respect for one another.

While fishing in a stream, Laura and a friend discover something shiny in the water. Believing that it is gold, Laura and Jonah take many secret trips to this spot to gather it all. Mary is thrilled to learn that she has qualified for a state-wide mathematics competition, but the excitement is halted when Charles cannot afford the expenses for the trip. Unfortunately, everyone's spirits plummet in the wake of a drastic tax increase, which creates problems for hard-working families like the Ingalls.

Feeling pleased and hopeful about the success of his current crop, Charles and his family must confront serious devastation when it is completely destroyed by a tornado. Reverend Alden falls ill while collecting donations for a struggling town. He is taken in by an ex-convict named Caleb Hodgekiss and his wife. Caleb helps the Reverend by traveling to Walnut Grove and encourages everyone to donate money. He earns the community's trust with his sensitive and caring personality, but because of his dark past, it's hard to tell what he might do.
Johnny Cash and his wife, June Carter Cash, play the roles of Caleb and Mattie Hodgekiss in this episode.

Nellie's physical abuse toward Bunny leads to a dangerous riding accident, but as the little girl lies in bed with a concussion and possible paralysis, her distraught mother blames Laura and orders Nels to shoot the animal. Laura secretly takes Bunny home until she can figure out a plan, but her problems run even deeper when she begins to believe that she is responsible for Nellie's condition.

Laura's beloved horse, Bunny, has officially been returned to her. She eagerly prepares to enter a local race. Jealous, Nellie throws a tantrum until Harriet agrees to buy her a thoroughbred -- without Nels' approval. Although Nellie and her horse are expected to win the race, Laura perseveres with her training. The stakes are higher than ever when Harriet donates a lavish prize for the winner.

Frustrated that Carrie has insisted on tagging along for a school assignment, Mary and Laura fail to keep a close eye on her. They live to regret this when the little girl wanders off and falls into an underground mine shaft.
Emotionally distraught after her little girl has fallen down a mine shaft, Caroline Ingalls instinctively blames someone else (in this case, Miss Beadle). Even considering the magnitude of the situation, this is incredibly out of character for Caroline, and you never see her do such a thing again.

On Halloween night, Laura and Mary get permission from their parents to walk into town and pull a little prank at the Mercantile. Laura's imagination runs wild when she peeks into the Olesons' window and witnesses Nels committing an unspeakable crime. Scarred by what she has seen, Laura can't get anyone to believe her.

In the wake of his mother's death, a devastated Charles travels home with the intention of bringing his father back to Walnut Grove. On Christmas Eve, Miss Beadle decides to surprise the schoolchildren by letting them go home early. This proves to be a grave mistake when the kids are trapped by a vicious blizzard outside, and none of them can find their way home. As Doc Baker turns the school into a makeshift hospital for frostbitten victims, the men must brave the extreme weather conditions and track down their loved ones.

Grace and Isaiah Edwards' adopted son, John, receives a four-year scholarship to a university in Chicago. Isaiah would rather have a son to share his farming lifestyle. John and Mary have marriage plans that will not be possible if John decides to follow his dream. Torn between two worlds, John is forced to make the most difficult decision of his life.

Doc Baker assists with an outbreak of mountain fever in a nearby town. The people of Walnut Grove are hopeful that the disease will pass their community by. Grace and Isaiah's young daughter, Alicia, becomes seriously ill, so Isaiah takes her to an abandoned house in town to nurse her back to health. Laura appears to have the fever as well, and Charles frantically sets out to find Doc Baker.

As a special school activity, Miss Beadle allows the children to create group skits that they will later perform for their parents. Mary and Laura team up with Nellie and Ginny Clark, a lonely young girl whose widowed mother has been neglecting her daughter's emotional needs. Meanwhile, Willie is having trouble getting the other boys to perform "Tom Sawyer" with him.

The young son of a recently-killed Sioux Indian moves to Walnut Grove with his Caucasian mother, Amelia. Amelia's father agrees to let them stay with him, but is ashamed that his daughter married a Native American and ostracizes the child. Spotted Eagle also endures harsh treatment from his insensitive classmates, but the Ingalls girls become his only friends.
At the end of this episode, Miss Beadle gets extremely angry at a student, Seth, for beating up Spotted Eagle. She slams her hand down on his desk and screams in his face. This is an extremely rare bout of fury from Miss Beadle, who was usually very mild-tempered and calm, even when such issues arose in the classroom.

Mary is kicked in the stomach by one of the family's horses, but insists that she is fine. Her internal injuries worsen over time. Unable to be properly treated by Doc Baker, she is hospitalized in Rochester, where she must undergo surgery. As if this weren't stressful enough, Charles and Caroline are in a position where they may not be able to afford the mounting hospital bills.

While Caroline stays with Mary, Charles sets out with Mr. Edwards to find work and send money back to the hospital. They eventually accept a mining job that involves building a tunnel for a railroad. Sick with fear over his daughter's illness, Charles disregards his own safety and faces serious danger.

Solomon Henry, an 11-year-old child, runs away from home to pursue his dream of attending school somewhere. He comes across Charles Ingalls in Mankato, and hitches a ride in the back of his wagon. He eventually becomes a guest in the Ingalls home. As he helps out around the farm and goes to school in Walnut Grove, Solomon's optimistic attitude is an inspiration to the whole family.

Laura befriends a classmate named Anna, whose excessive stuttering affects her ability to make friends. Laura stands by the girl's side when she is excluded from Nellie's elite new club, but matters are complicated when Laura is caught stealing Nellie's music box. Nellie agrees not to tell anyone, but she has ulterior motives of her own that may threaten Laura's friendship with Anna.

When it comes time to elect a new classroom president, Mary and Nellie are first to compete for the position. To even things out a bit, the boys strategically elect a shy, mentally-delayed classmate named Elmer Dopkins. The trouble is, Elmer's overprotective father is fully aware of the boys' ulterior motives, but how far can a parent go to protect his bullied child?
Michael Landon, Jr. plays Jim in this episode. He's the blonde boy who nominates Mary for class president.

A heavy rain has been falling in Walnut Grove for two months, and shows no signs of stopping. Charles fears that his crops will suffer and his family will go hungry. He takes them on a 400-mile journey for a temporary new life in Gold Country. Caroline opens and teaches a school in a tent, right in the middle of town, but it proves to be a less-than-ideal learning environment for everyone.

Laura is shocked and devastated to find Jack, her beloved dog, dead in the barn. After an emotional burial, Charles brings home a stray named Bandit to curb his daughter's pain, but Laura refuses to bond with the new dog. Meanwhile, the Walnut Grove townspeople have mixed reactions to the idea of welcoming an eccentric new townsperson into their Church community.

Her parents took her there on November 23, 1881, and she did not graduate until June 11, 1889 at age 24, meaning she was a student for eight years. However, Mary was absent during the 1887-1888 school year as her parents could not afford the tuition and needed more time to come up with the money.

Finally, Charles proposes that he and Caroline renew their wedding vows.

Dr. Baker posts an ad for another doctor, to relieve his workload (and Mrs. Oleson's constant pestering). He hires Dr. Caleb Ledoux, but doesn't count on him being black. The Ingalls are among the very few to accept Dr. Ledoux, as others are outright hateful and racist. Even Dr. Baker struggles with his prejudice and, to show his spite, gives the young doctor minor cases. In the end, Dr. Ledoux is the only doctor available to call on a pregnant woman who is having labor complications. The woman's husband won't allow the doctor in the house (because he's black), and can only get to her when Charles knocks the man aside. Ledoux performs a successful surgery and delivers a son to the couple. A stunned and shaken Dr. Baker witnesses the surgery and concedes that only Caleb's and his superior training could have saved the woman's life. Dr. Ledoux later angrily tells his wife he plans to leave Walnut Grove. But only Dr. Baker's emotional speech at church convinces the good doctor to stay.

Upon her arrival there, she is in for a rude awakening when she realizes the professor teaching the course is more interested in pursuing a brief, romantic encounter with her than teaching her about what the rest of the class is learning through reading the novels.

An overweight boy comes to school at Walnut Grove. The schoolkids pick on him because he is so heavy. Nancy persuades the boy to bully the other school children. The jokes of the school children get so bad that the obese boy decides to quit school. The school children then decide that enough is enough. They go over and apologize to him.

Mrs. Oleson changes the restaurant into a franchise restaurant, She has a hard time living up to the agreement of the franchise. Charles and Nels get together and decide to open up a restaurant of their own, right across the street. The new restaurant forces Mrs. Oleson's restaurant out of business. The town is now back to normal, or at least as normal as it can be.

In an unusual framing sequence, a 1980s couple bids on a antique folding table, and notice the "CI" brand as its maker. The episode flashes back to Charles handcrafting the table for sale in Mr. Johanssen's shop. Mr. Johanssen commissions Charles to craft more of the tables to meet demand in Minneapolis. Soon, Charles is running a small round-the-clock factory to fashion the tables, leaving his family back in Walnut Grove for weeks on end. An unscrupulous furniture factory owner steals the design for the table and begins to mass-produce the item at a much lower cost.

In another tent, a mother's child dies while be born. Caroline decides to give the baby to the other mother since she knows that the baby will be taken care of properly.

While James is in the hospital, Mr. Edwards, Mr. Ingalls, and Albert look for the bank robbers. They find them and bring them to justice. Charles continues to believe that James will get better.

A tiny circus performer, Lou, decides to look for work in Walnut Grove after his wife dies while giving birth to his baby girl. A prejudice Mrs. Oleson uses her power to make sure that the dwarf doesn't find work. She even threatens Mr. Anderson that she would close her account at the bank if he hired Lou. To keep the infant alive, the dwarf must steal food. Mrs. Oleson decides to press charges when she finds out who stole the food. When Nancy falls in a well, Lou risks his life to save the girl. That's when Mrs. Oleson decides that being small has its advantages and decides to drop all charges.

A traveling side-show comes to Walnut Grove. The main attraction is a wild boy. The wild boy escapes and becomes friends with the Wilders. The boy turns out to be Matthew Roger and the reason he acts wild is become he is given morphine.

Mr. Edwards keeps Matthew at his place, but Nancy Oleson tells on him. A judge comes and rules that Matthew be placed in an institution. Then Mr. Edwards makes a statement that everyone is crazy sometime. He convinces the judge to allow the boy to stay with Mr. Edwards.

The people of Walnut Grove are at first excited when the railroad wants to build through the town. This excitement doesn't last long. The railroad tells several people that they must leave their houses. The people make a stand at the Carter's place. This delay in building convinces the railroad to find a different route.

Laura's childhood friend, Jane Canfield, comes back to Walnut Grove. Although she is blind, she falls in love with Mr. Edwards, a person who was old enough to be her father. Jane then undergoes an operation which allows her to see again. After a lot of soul searching, Mr. Edwards tells Jane that she should go out and find herself a better life. At the end of the show, we see Mr. Edwards in the distance watching Jane leave on the stagecoach.

With Almanzo and John out of town for the National Grange convention in San Francisco, Mr. Edwards takes it upon himself to keep an eye out for Laura and Sarah. When an attractive minister with the diocese arrives in town on official business pertaining to Reverend Alden, Mr. Edwards jumps to the wrong conclusion when he notices both married women spending a lot of time together with the man.

When Albert continually breaks the law, Charles takes him out of the big city and back to Walnut Grove. Albert doesn't change in Walnut Grove because he is addicted to morphine. Charles finally forces Albert to stop using morphine. He stays with Albert while he goes through withdrawal. Thanks to Charles, Albert is no longer addicted to morphine. We find out at the end of the show that Albert will become Dr. Albert Ingalls.

Laura gives birth to a baby boy. The baby is fine and healthy for a while. Then for no apparent reason the baby dies. To ease her mind of the death, she blames Doc Baker for what happened to her baby. Doc's reputation declines so much that he must leave town to find work. Just before Doc Baker leaves, Rose comes down with small pox. Doc must stay quarantined with the Wilders for two weeks. Watching the Doc save Rose's life causes Laura to rethink her attitude about Doc Baker. Laura and the rest of the town convince him to stay on.

Later, while revisiting the hometown in which he grew up, Albert--who loves being back in his beloved childhood town--takes an interest in a beautiful girl named Michelle. Little Jason Carter longs to lock lips with classmate Amy Bryant, and the town faces crop-related financial issues, prompting Charles to offer his help. Through all the good and the bad, it all gets thrown into perspective when Albert, who has been fatigued and having frequent nosebleeds, visits a specialist and receives some absolutely devastating news that can either make or break the Walnut Grove community as it is known.

Armed with rifles, anger, and unprecedented determination, the townspeople take the fight as far as they can, but when Mr. Lassiter uses his upper hand in the matter to force them all out, they reach a unanimous, yet devastating solution to even the score.

A trip to Mankato for some Christmas shopping flares into a nightmare when Laura and Almanzo's 2-year-old daughter Rose is kidnapped by Elsa Norris, an emotionally unstable young woman who is grieving the loss of her baby. Elsa brings the little girl home to her husband, and they care for her as their own. Laura, Almanzo, and Mr. Edwards search frantically for Rose and, along the way, are joined by young Samuel, an orphaned runaway who is searching for a family to call his own. Back in Walnut Grove, with his wife away for the time being, Nels jumps at the opportunity to teach his greedy daughter Nancy some important lessons about the true meaning of the season. Jason Carter will stop at nothing to afford a Christmas present for his mother, and John and Sarah do their best to make the holiday special for their boys, who may not have much to open on Christmas morning this year. Lastly, Mr. Montague--who is initially disgusted by the commercialism of Christmas--comes through for his friends when they need it most.
