Born in in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, Rya Kihlstedt, a graduate of Skidmore College, made her film debut in the 1993 thriller Arctic Blue as Anne Marie, and that same year appeared as Leah Woodward in an episode of Tribeca. After appearing in the 2001 film She Creature, she took a 9-year hiatus from acting to raise her children. In 2009, she returned to screen appearing in the comedy film Women in Trouble, and its sequel, Elektra Luxx.
