Born in Monroe, Georgia, Frances Conroy studied drama at Dickinson College and graduated from the Juilliard School (BFA), performing in several New York productions prior to making her Broadway debut in the 1980 performance of The Lady from Dubuque. In 1978 she appeared in the TV movie All's Well That Ends Well, followed by her debut appearance in a small role in the 1979 film Manhattan. She also earned a sprinkling of generally overlooked film and TV parts, including small parts in Woody Allen's Manhattan (1979) (debut). Often wearing a coloured contact lens, she is very open regarding the 1990s car crash that caused severe trauma to the cornea of her right eye.
