Born in Ramsey County, Minnesota, Julia Duffy began her acting career on stage in her teens, moving to New York City in 1970 to enroll at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts. She began her career in television, appearing as Gerry Braylee in a 1972 episode of Love of Life, and then in 1973 taking on the role of Penny Davis in The Doctors.
