Born in New York, Richard Roundtree began his career as a model at the Ebony Fashion Fair, and gained widespread popularity with his portrayal as private detective John Shaft in the 1971 action movie Shaft.
Richard Roundtree continued to act on screen right up to his death from pancreatic cancer at the age of 81.
