JD Vance

Born in Middletown, Ohio, JD Vance was named James Donald Bowman at birth. He has altered his first, middle and last names through his life. Adopted by his stepfather he became James David Hamel, going by "J.D.", enlisted in the Marines he was known as Corporal James D. Hamel. He attended Ohio State University, where he received a BA in political science, and then studied at Yale Law School, earning a law degree in 2013. It was around the time he was admitted to the bar that he changed his surname to Vance, in honor of the grandmother that raised him, and then he became "JD" Vance, with no punctuation. He is known for the 2016 memoir Hillbilly Elegy, written as J.D. Vance, which turned into a movie in 2020, and launched his political career.
