"The Magicians has been a part of our SYFY family for five fantastic seasons," the network said in a statement. "As we near the end of this journey, we want to thank John McNamara, Sera Gamble, Henry Alonso Myers, Lev Grossman, and our entire brilliant cast, crew, writers, and directors for their beautiful creation. But most of all, we thank the fans for their tremendous support and passion. Because of you, magic will be in our hearts forever.”

i knew it was going to happen as soon as jason ralph left they were going to close the curtain on this show
This cancellation reminds me of Sleepy Hollow. Sleepy Hollow also continued for only one more season without one of the long time main characters.
I've read a few articles on this, and in one of the comments, someone pointed out that ever since Comcast bought the SyFy Channel, no series goes past the five season mark.
Apparently doing so requires contract renegotiations, which means the actors get pay raises, and so to avoid spending all that money, the SyFy Channel just cancels the show.
Any normal person would pay the raises and pass some of those extra expenses on to their advertisers. Too bad the SyFy Channel isn't run by normal people.
What is Sci Fi thinking? It really isn't like they have a deep bullpen of quality original programming. So Killjoys just ended. Now Magicians? Doesn't leave much left really. Sorry, not into wrestling.
This sucks, one of my favourite running shows and I suspect an open ending :(
I wonder if this was planned ahead and they put together an actual finale as they are midway through the broadcast of the final season.
If Margo weren't a thing, I'd applaud this action because the show just doesn't seem to have any direction. But Margo is a thing so now I have to go eat a whole pan of brownies to stave of the saudade induced depression which is surely coming for me.
