This reminds me of the 1975 Space 1999 episode "Space Brain" where they fly though what they realize was a sentient being. At least in this episode they attempt to make amends.
I'm also puzzled at the fact that if energy is so low and they have to conserve on making food, why they can run the holosuites, which seem like they would take a lot of energy...?
