ABC opened the Winter season with several premieres last week. Freshman series, Shifting Gears, opened with strong numbers. The latest Tim Allen-led series had one of the highest-rated premieres for new shows on the network this season. The big lead-in also helped Abbott Elementary, which picked up nearly two million viewers over its last new episode in December, for one of its highest-rated episodes to date. High Potential returned from the holiday break, up two million viewers from its last new episode in November. After an evening of repeats on Monday, Will Trent opened its third season, up almost two million viewers from its season two finale in May. The Rookie opened its seventh season, up half a million viewers from last season's finale.

NBC wrapped the first season of Brilliant Minds last week. The series ended even with its last new episode in December. Fans will now have to wait and hope that was enough to earn the show a second season. The Irrational returned from the holiday break, down two hundred thousand viewers. That's not going to help the show make its case for renewal. The One Chicago shows returned with their first new episodes since mid-November. Chicago Med and PD were up, while Chicago Fire was even.

FOX premiered new medical drama, Doc, to good numbers. Kitchen Nightmares was back last week, up three hundred thousand viewers from its last new episode in 2023. The network ran a repeat of freshman series, Going Dutch, after an NFL overrun, but the audience did not follow the show to its regular night. Animal Control started its second season down from where it ended in the spring. Neither of the network's scripted comedies are doing well this season. Chances are at least one will be cancelled.

The Winter season is off and running. What new or returning shows are you watching?
Written by LadyShelley on Jan 14, 2025
Happy's Place is doing well for NBC. It's a rare bright spot for the network's comedy block, which has really suffered the past several years. Chances are very good the show will be renewed.
Brilliant Minds' chances for renewal are iffy at best. The one thing it has going for it is that The Irrational is also in the ratings cellar. At least one of them will be cancelled.
I really enjoyed Brilliant Minds. I hope the show gets renewed. It seems like lately that shows only make it 1 season and then get cancelled.
In a rare event, Doc actually gained viewers over its premiere. Things are looking good that it will be renewed.
Doc is really a promising show so far.
Doc is interesting so far. Same with Going Dutch.
