Accomplished chef, Gemma, and her paramedic boyfriend, Kieran, live together in West London, above Gemma's café. Kieran and Gemma are madly in love. But unfortunately, love alone can't pay café suppliers, or London rent. The pair are barely making ends meet, and their different shift patterns mean they're like ships in the night. To ease some financial pressure, they've decided to take in a lodger. Enter Ray, a former world-class synchronised swimmer, whose arrival with a Volvo full of baggage commences a modern-day love story that will change the trio's lives - and how they view relationships - forever.

The long gonzo shots,
poetry of emotions,
Heartbreaking beauty.
This episode is so perfectly crafted that summing it up in anything less than a poem would be an insult. The acting is flawless. The timing exquisite. The frustrations: hair wrenchingly; screen screaming; exploration of silent expletives. (I was swearing at the moving pictures with my wide eyes.) If the script wasn't so well written and executed I would swear this was a documentary of a London wedding.
I don't usually cry at weddings, but this one gave me that pleasure. Teixeira, Carr, Labed, and supporting cast, seduced me so completely that I felt heartbreak, that I was fortunate enough to get to watch the wedding to which I didn't get invited.
[Edit] Just the shorthand between lifelong friends, the perfect Chekhovian photo album setting up the dance. The guests that synchronise to keep the audience on the edge... of their seat, (or any other knuckle whitening crescendo.) This entire episode was a tease. Not in a cruel school yard, but under the loving whip of a talented Mistress.
If this episode doesn't reach down your throat and crush your lungs, then you've never loved this strongly.
I don't even care what the next episode entails. Just the first four are enough to cement this series in the Pantheon of my mind. Oh my crushed eyelids - I loved this episode so much; it hollowed me out and left me silently feeling understood, seen and all of that other stuff that isn't as good as a hug with the people that you love.
Another season is needed.
