Edith's dreams of retirement to the sun with her long-term suitor Phil are shattered when her 50-year-old son Roger arrives home, seeking to recapture the happiness of his boyhood.

Phil and Roger make rival attempts to impress Edith on her 70th birthday. Roger's bright idea is to dig up Queenie, Edith's chaotic former cleaner, but Edith is far from pleased.

Queenie appoints herself marriage counsellor to Roger and Wendy, and Edith and Phil decide it's the right moment to take a weekend break. While the cats are away…

Edith explodes at his lack of judgement, but after swiftly changing the subject, Roger gets her agreement for a wedding video, which he says will be his present to her and Phil. However, he then proceeds to put Georgie behind the camera.

It's the last Christmas that Edith will have with her family before she and Phil set off for their dream retirement in the Mediterranean. Edith's son Roger enlists her scurrilous one-time flame, Bob The Burglar, to give Christmas its proper flavour. Edith's sister Joan won't watch the Queen's Speech anywhere else. Queenie locks Sandra and Wendy into a wardrobe, and Phil finds himself talking to a ghost.
