Natsume Yuujinchou - Episode Guide

Natsume discovers that the heirloom "Book of Friends" that his grandmother, Reiko, gave him possesses the names of the spirits she defeated and bound to her will. Assisted by a cat whom Natsume addresses as Nyanko-Sensei (lit. Master Little Meow), Natsume aims to return all of the names to their rightful owners.

Natsume is visited by the village's local god who is currently fading because of the lack of devotees.

Natsume is implored to help spirits who are currently being exorcised. He finds a kindred spirit in Tanuma, a boy who also senses spirits although not as powerful as Natsume.

Natsume's secret is found out by Sasada, the class president, during the "Trial of Courage." She asks for his help to find the spirit that lives in the abandoned school. Natsume denies the fact that he can see anything, but she won't take no for an answer. Meanwhile, the spirit, Shigure, captures the rest of their school mates, in fury of the school being torn down...

Natsume comes across an old ticket in Reiko's belongings and decides to go to the abandoned train station to see why she kept it. There, he meets a slow witted spirit named Santo, who was waiting for Reiko the entire time to go Kiriganuma, to see and make up with his friend, Mikuri, but the trip isn't as easy as it first seems...

Natsume goes to a dam and finds a town that had been submerged in water. Just then, Natsume gets possessed by a yokai and falls unconscious.

Natsume goes to a hot spring for a school trip, with an errand from Shigeru to pick up Teacups from a near by pottery. While there he meets and helps a little fox spirit, who quickly grows attached to him.

Natsume meets a spirit who used to be friends with a man who could also see spirits, but one day lost this ability.

Natsume meets a popular actor named Natori Shuuichi who can also see spirits, and has a side job as an exorcist.

Natsume is possessed by a sick koto player, whose friend wants her to be able to play one last time.

When Natsume finally has enough of Nyanko's behavior Nyanko leaves, wandering about by himself and causing trouble.

Natsume is cursed by an evil spirit which is sealed to a tree, not wanting to trouble his adopted family, he decided to run away from home.

Tanuma finds out Nyanko-Sensei is a spirit. Tanuma and Natsume enjoy the autumn festival and previous acquaintances are seen again.

While outside during school Natsume is hit with a ball while reading. He goes to retrieve the ball and ends up breaking a Youkai's seal (much like he had with Nyanko-sensei). Later that night Natsume and Nyanko-sensei discover a look-a-like of Nyanko, only to have him steal the Book Of Friends!

While fooling around in the snow, Natsume and Nyanko-sensei run in to Gen, a forest guardian who lives inside a statue. Gen tries to take over Natsume's body, but instead takes over a snow rabbit that Natsume had made. Gen pleads Natsume to help him find an evil spirit who destroyed Sui, his guardian partner, and Natsume agrees. But it seems Gen isn't telling everything he should...

Natori invites Natsume on a Hot Spring trip. But noises from the closet and a kimono-clad figure dangled from the ceiling make Natsume uneasy. Not wanting to trouble Natori because of his kind gesture to enjoy the Hot Spring with him, Natsume investigates the Hot Spring himself. During the night Natsume meets with the Youkai, where she comments that he is too soft, and attacks!

Natsume takes care of an abandoned egg from a nest, not concidering it could be a Youkai. After it hatches it turns out it is a rare baby spirit called Tatsumi, who thinks that Natsume is it's parent. Natsume can't help but get attached to the little spirit even as Tatsumi grows tired and sick. But as Natsume takes care of Tatsumi a mysterious spirit comes, and wants to take away Tatsumi for his master... who wants to eat him!

Natsume encounters a spirit who was enslaved by his grandmother Reiko 50 years ago by writing his name on a torn page from the Book of Friends, and tying to a tree in a forest. Can Natsume help locate the torn page? What was Reiko's intention of tying it to a tree?

There is a new girl in school Taki Tooru. And with her appearance at school comes these strange circles in the ground. Much like UFO circles. As Natsume tries to figure out the circles and Taki he is visited by another Youkai. Only this time the Youkai isn't looking for his name, but for a snack.

Natsume is dragged off into the cave of the evil spirit that is after Tooru. He temporarily loses the ability to see youkai after being poisoned by the spirit. Will he be able to stop the youkai from eating Tooru without his sight?

Natsume, Kitamoto and Nishimura take a trip to an old inn to spend some quality time doing their homework. Surrounding the inn is a lake; that is believed to be home to a mermaid.

From the day that a picture of a row of cherry trees in a desolate winter was obtained, every time Natsume wakes up, his rooms is covered in petals. Trying to solve the root of this activity, Natsume and Nyako Sensei try and return the picture to Miya, a shadowy figure who accompanies the picture. But why can't they return it to Miya...?

Mysterious footprints and markings are left on the gate of the Fujiwara house. Strange things start going on inside the house and Shigeru verifies with Natsume that the cause of this activity involves the husband and wife who used to live there. And so Shigeru tells story of those two but in a unusually childlike manner...

After chasing an injured yokai around, Natsume encounters Natori, who then invites him to go to a meeting of sorcerers. There, Natsume meets others with similar powers and similar problems.

At a house rumored to be haunted by ghosts, Natsume hears the voice of a child. Following the voice to its source, Natsume finds a child named Kai, who is trapped in a casket-like box. Kai tells Natsume that he someone is chasing him every day.

Why don't you decide already? Which is more important to you? When Natsume finds out what Kai really is, that is what Natori asks him.

One day, Natsume finds a yokai named Kagejawan running around near his home, which he soon learns means disaster is about to strike.

Natsume is accosted by a spirit who asks for her brother's name back. She says that both of them have come from the village of floating spring, a paradise sealed off from the land of men. Meanwhile, the local Youkai are happy that the local priest is no longer in his temple. Natsume worries for his friend Tanuma, the priest's son, but isn't sure what to say...

Natsume is approached by someone he knew from elementary school. He wants nothing to do with them, but they threaten to reveal his secret: that he can see Youkai, if he doesn't come along with them. He reluctantly goes with them, and is taken to meet a strange girl...

Midterms are over, and Natsume leaves on a trip with Nishimura, Kitamoto, and Sasada. He realizes that the scenery he's viewing from the train is from one of the places he grew up in, when he was passed around from one family to the next. He'd thought he didn't have any good memories of the time, but then he remembers what happened when he lived there...

Natsume helps clean the stoeroom at Taki's house with Tanuma. He realizes that one of the kimonos that her grandfather, who researched youkai, used to ward off demons was missing, but decides not to tell them so they won't be scared. But that kimono was an old doll youkai, who was trying to recover its body which was torn apart when her grandfather sealed it

There is something killing Youkai and draining them of their blood. Natsume can't help but investigate and runs into old friends.

Natsume finds out who's been stealing the youkai blood: the exorcist Matoba Seiji. He investigates with the help of Natori, but is captured by Matoba's servant youkai. Matoba is willing to sacrifice any number of youkai for his own ambitions. He tells Natsume why he's gathering blood: to release the seal on a powerful youkai. Natsume learns that there are people who treat Youkai in a totally different way than he or even Natori.

Natsume is invited to go to a pottery classroom with Shigeru. It's being held in an inn where he once stayed. When he goes there, he meets an old friend: the young fox child he once saved.

Without Sensei to protect him, Natsume has to remain constantly on guard. But the pressure of keeping secrets from his friends is causing Natsume to break.

After a brief incident in the forest, Tanuma has become distant to Natsume like he is avoiding something. In the meantime, there is something breaking glass around the school.

Tanuma is experiencing how Natsume lives every day. While Natsume and the youkai gain an understanding.

A youkai from Natsume past has found him and memories of living with relatives before the Fujiwaras are explored.

The youkai hold a party to celebrate Natsume. Things get out of hand when they ask Natsume for a human game, and he suggests Shadow Tag. When Nyanko-sensei becomes "it", he starts stomping youkai left and right. And then Misuzu-sama, the 100 foot tall youkai, shows up...

Natsume is jumped by a group of Youkai trying to steal the Book of Friends for their master. Once captured, Natsume discovers that an old problem is back in a big way.

Natsume, now trapped in the mansion, is trying to keep the Monkey Mask youkai from revealing the Book of Friends to Matoba. While Hinoe and Misuzu attempt to find the strange youkai's master.

After Natsume returned Amana's name, she accused him of stealing her ring. He has three days to find and return it before she burns down his house. To make matters worse, the ring is trapped in the hair of a migratory youkai, and Nyanko-sensei is unable to use his powers.

Natsume is at home early one evening when he hears a knock on the door. He sees Tohko outside, asking to be let in. But when he opens the door, there's nobody there, and a gust of wind rushes past. Another Youkai is after the book of friends!

An old classmate Yuriko, remembers her time watching Natsume and how he was a little weird. A clingbug from Natsume's past reminds him of the time he spent running from a youkai with a grudge.

Natsume overhears whispers that a powerful youkai is reviving, later that evening he is trapped in a bottle as an offering. Humans can't see or hear him, so Nyanko-sensei decides to help the "best" way he can…

Natsume's greatest fear has come true. Someone not involved in the world of youkai is hurt because of him. Natori needs Natsume to regain his composure or they will be eaten by Omibashira!

Natsume is walking home one day when he's accosted by a flying Tengu, who lifts him up into the sky! Meanwhile, Nyanko-sensei is stuck in a well, where Nanase tells him a story about how she learned to never get close to a youkai.

Every 10 years the followers of Houdzuigami and Fudzukigami have a battle to determine the fate of the land. Natsume is approached by the followers of Houdzukigami to act as their missing god. Natori has been given the job of finding the missing god or seal Fuduzkigami before he wins

While being swept down the river, Natsume managed to feel the presences of Hudzuki-gami. Natori must make the choice to follow Natsume instincts or seal Fudzuki-gami.

Natsume gets a call from a relative: his parents home is being sold. He tells himself that it doesn't matter, and that he's forgotten his past. But he's not nearly as over it as he thinks...

Natsume is going home for the last time, but first he must stop by his relative's house to get the key. But he is cautious, as inside is a youkai that tormented Natsume, and a girl that has always resented him.

Natsume is possessed by a spirit. Obsessed with returning home, he remembers the events that occured just after his father's death.

Nyanko-sensei runs away from Natsume to chase a dragonfly. He finds himself stuck with two young children on their first errand. He keeps trying to leave, but the area of the forest they're in is filled with dangerous youkai. Can he help them complete their errand, while still retaining his sanity?

As the first delicate snowflake touches the cold ground, Nyanko-sensei dozes on his hot-water bottle next to Takashi Natsume. While his aunt prepares a warm dinner, Natsume takes a walk, welcoming the snow and the chilly weather. However, his peaceful promenade is disturbed by a white, fluffy snowman yokai with perturbing black eyes, searching for something warm and sparkly. With no further information, Natsume sets off to help find what the spirit desires.

A yokai in a pot wants Natsume to find her doll. When he finds it, she does not recognize it because it has been outside for years. Natsume cleans the doll and makes it a new kimono and the yokai recognizes it in its new clothes.

Natsume finds a towel in the forest during a walk in the rain, and encounters a female yokai who demands it back. The yokai follows Natsume to his home and manages to get Natsume to help her find the "handsome man" who gave it to her 50 years ago at a bus stop. She wants to return the towel the man gave her after he was concerned seeing her play in the rain. The child yokai smells the man's scent in his granddaughter, who tells Natsume her grandfather is in the hospital for an illness.

Natsume finds a letter addressed to him from Matoba. Walking in the forest, he loses it when an amateur exorcist seals a yokai in a pot. Noticing the weak seal, Natsume and Nyanko-sensei take it to Natori's condo to re-seal it. When Natsume returns home he sees Matoba and learns the letter was a request for Natsume to attend a meeting of strong exorcists to weed out the person who has been targeting exorcists.

Matoba brings Natsume to one of the Matoba clan villas to attend the exorcist meeting. Natsume learns that a mask yokai called "Magatsumen" is controlling people and disguises himself as a shiki in order to test attendees if they have been possessed. By following a strange spring sound, Natsume finds the culprit behind the mask possessions and drives the yokai out. Matoba shoots the yokai with an arrow to exorcise it.

Natsume sees strange writing on the chalk board in the Earth Science classroom. Taki tells Natsume of the hairy yokai she helped leave her home. Natsume comes to Taki's home and learns that three yokai had been trapped there -- two "rabbit" yokai and a hairy white one. The hairy yokai is enchanted by Taki and helps find the rabbit yokai in Taki's home. Natsume learns the hairy yokai was the one who wrote on the school chalkboard and goes back to read the yokai's feelings on it.

Natsume is chased by two yokai who cast a voice-sealing spell on him. A large bird yokai saves him and brings him to a valley before Nyanko-sensei finds him. Natsume regains his voice after the group of yokai attack him in his room, and then returns the bird yokai's name.

Tanuma invites his friends to an inn run by his relatives. While sweeping outside, Tanuma is greeted by an old woman named Ito-san. Natsume learns that Ito-san is a yokai that serves the Mizunagi shrine by protecting the mountain festival.

An episode depicting the story of Natori Shuuichi and Matoba Seiji when they were young. This episode shows Natori's family and his childhood of being able to see youkai, getting hated by his family and becoming an exorcist.

While being chased by a hairy youkai. Natsume comes across a tiny mushroom youkai who tells him about a noble youkai named Shuon who was on a journey. Natsume helps the little youkai prepare for his meeting with the noble youka.

The story of why Touko and Shigeru adopted Natsume.

Natsume catches a cold and the mid-ranks go and get medicine for him, doing difficult chores for the yokai with the medicine. Amid Natsume's fever dreams are the memory of when he got sick as a child and he briefly talks to Reiko. 

While searching for Nyanko-sensei, Natsume gets invovled in a dangerous game of hide and seek.

A yokai known as "The Days Eater," turns Natsume back to a young child. Nyanko-sensei enlists the aid of Tanuma and Taki

Natsume helps a rock washer look for his apprentice who has stopped writing to him.

Natsume's old classmate Shibata (from "False Friend"/"Itsuwari no Yūjin") calls. Natsume visit Shibata together with Tanuma, where Shibata tells them about the "Doll Mansion of Sotogi".

Natsume meets Tsukiko, a daughter of an exorcist named Takuma Yousuke who has recently lost his ability to see or hear youkai. Because she lacks the ability to see youkai, she asked Natori to check around the house because she feels something is wrong and a youkai may be out to hurt her father.

Natsume and Natori discover that the youkai shiki (demon servants and friends) of Takuma Yusuke have been trying to bring misfortune into the house.

How Natsume first befriended Nishimura and Kitamoto, along with a better look at their family lives and point of view.

Natsume is surprised when a youkai comes to seek Reiko in gratitude. Years ago, the youkai's to-be-bride received freedom from her help, and now is about to be wed. They invite Natsume to the wedding

Natsume talks to a teenage boy at the station, who turns out to be a youkai that left a human because of their feelings for one another. The boy wants to find her because he received a wedding invitation.

After a flood occurs on Four Mask Hill during Natsume's summer school session, a mask randomly appearing in the school worries Natsume.

A competition is opened to search for a famous researcher's sealed room. The prize are his research books, and many exorcists are gathered. Natori is invited, Natsume wants to help as this might mean finding something that might let him find information about the Book of Friends.

Natsume decides to tell Natori about his secret, when the search for the seal room ends.  

Natsume encounters an old man who asks for help with getting home. The old man turns out to be a yokai who will soon disappear and he asks Natsume to help him to fulfill a promise that he had made.

Tanuma gives Natsume some clay, and he tries his hand at sculpting a figure. However, the next day, the figure has disappeared, and other strange things are happening in the house. Is a Yōkai causing mischief in the house? Or is it just a rat?

Natsume is forced to help rebuild a tiny house that's a residence for a goddess.

Natsume is caught up in a mysterious game between youkai and man.

Natsume and Kitamoto are victims of a horrid curse.

Chobi is depressed because his favorite comb broke. Meanwhile, Natsume sees a white dragon in the sky...

Natsume meets Matoba in an unusual place. Matoba hunts for a dangerous yokai at an abandoned mansion.

Taki's brother suddenly comes home from college, and has something very important on his mind...

Nishimura finds Natsume coming to visit him each night at his house, but something seems strange...

Natsume finds himself in a house with a strange ritual, and unknown forces moving against those who would perform it.

Natsume, Natori and Matoba work to complete the ritual to welcome a powerful god.

Natsume meets the very first Yokai whose name was written in the Book of Friends.

Natsume takes in a strange origami doll that shows wonderful dreams.
