Born in Sydney, Australia, Toni Collette began studying drama at Sydney's National Institute of Dramatic Art at the age of 16, gaining experience in various stage productions. She made her film debut as Wendy Robinson in the 1991 film The Efficiency Expert, aka Spotswood, earning a nomination for Best Supporting Actress from the Australian Film Institute. Her debut on the small screen was in a 1990 episode of A Country Practice, and with a busy film career, did not return to the small screen until her role as Beth in the 2001 made-for-TV movie Dinner with Friends.
