The traditional restaurant Djurgårdskällaren, run by the Löwanders, has not been left unmarked by the economical difficulties caused by the war. The oldest son Gustaf tries to solve the problems through illegal means.

The younger son Peter returns home with a Jewish refugee. Gustaf tries to hide the restaurants troubles, but Peter suspects that something's wrong. Nina and Calle meet again.

Peter confronts Gustaf about the restaurants impending economical problems. Nina and Calle hide that they're a couple. Helga and Gustaf organize a party celebrating the 50th anniversary of Djurgårdskällaren.

Peter and Suzanne's engagement unsettles the family while the conflict with Ragnarsson escalates. Nina and Calle's relationship is pushed to its limits. Maggan brings Uno back home.

Ragnarsson blackmails Peter by threatening Suzanne. Calle makes a bad decision concerning Nina. Maggan and Lilly's relationship develops but is jeopardized.

Nina and Peter are working hard to get the restaurant back into business.

Nina and Erik celebrates their engagement with a party that Calle reluctantly prepares the food for. Maggan is fired because of her involvement with the union.

Maggan gets aid from an unexpected source. Calle is forced to make a decision while Nina is pushed to do what convention allows. Gustaf takes advantage of Peter's momentary weakness.

The Rehnskölds now has a little daughter and Nina leads an uneventful lifestyle as a housewife. Peter works at a law firm and is no longer involved with the restaurant. Maggan challenges the patriarchal structures within the Union.

Nina's self-medication takes a turn for the worse. The battle between Gustaf and Peter gets dirtier while Ester gets more involved with Peter. Calle's position at the restaurant takes a dramatic leap.

December 1955. Christmas is coming up, Restaurant DK is doing extremely well, and everything should be joy and tranquility. However, the Löwander family is divided. A distressing event causes the matriarch Helga to make a new attempt to reunite the family, but Gustaf is still hurt and simply not interested. Peter's wife Ester feels unfairly left out of the running of the restaurant and tries to cause a rift between Peter and Nina. Nina struggles with her relationship with her daughter, and on Christmas Eve, she gives Calle a long-awaited Christmas present. Maggan meanwhile gets an unwelcome visit from the past.

Italian youngster Angelo starts as a dishwasher at Restaurant DK and finds the first 24 hour rough. Helga, Peter and Nina try to persuade Gustaf not to sell his shares in the restaurant, but Gustaf wants to be free from the family and move on to invest in his new workplace Oscarshof. Nina and Calle are worried about their pregnancy, having experienced several miscarriages in the past.

It is 1956. Henriette Winter is a new partner in the restaurant and Peter and Ester are trying to find a way to get rid of her. Backe is feeling his age and is becoming increasingly paranoid, upsetting the entire kitchen staff. Maggan tries to help Angelo and his Italian friends whom she discovers are living in squalor conditions, often not getting paid for their work. Gustaf has a visit from the police.

After the Oscarshof incident, Gustaf is missing. Fears are spreading that he might have taken his own life. Henriette Winter has decided to sell her share in the restaurant and Peter and Nina are fighting about who should buy it. Helga is forced pick sides in the conflict between Stickan and Calle, resulting in Backe deciding to leave the restaurant. Maggan persuades a reluctant Bellan to give Angelo the chance to work as a waiter in the dining room.

1957. Calle has been head chef at DK for a year and Gustaf is back working at the restaurant. Nina's daughter Christina wants to move to Stockholm to live with her mother, but Christina's father is not too sure. Peter and Ester are trying to find a way to remove Nina from her creation DK Club, but then someone from Peter's past turns up and turns his whole world upside down. Maggan receives an offer that could change hers and Uno's lives forever.

Restaurant DK is organising an Italian food week.

Peter is agonizing over whether or not he should leave his family and the restaurant in order to live with the love of his life Suzanne. Angelo resigns from DK, but he does not want to give any reasons why. Calle receives an offer to make a food program for television, whilst Maggan resigns in order to start working for Britt Gahn. Gustaf seeks treatment for his homosexual urges.

1962. Calle and Nina have been doing their television program for five years and their relationship is strained from working two jobs. Ragnarsson is back on the scene and wants to resume his work supplying DK with dishwashers. When Peter rejects his offer, Ragnarsson turns his anger towards Angelo, who has now advanced to head waiter. Gustaf and Astrid have found God and a new comfort in Pentecostalism. Backe turns up as a guest at DK together with his new fiancée, successfully making Helga jealous.

Helga has had a stroke and her family fear the worst. Peter and Esther are worried about what will happen to DK if Helga passes away and begin to make secret arrangements. The Social Democrats unite at DK to watch the election results to come in. Nina is overwhelmed by work and a visit from her daughter Christina, taking her stress and frustration out on Calle. Calle proceeds to seek comfort in an old friend. Ragnarsson continues to terrorise Angelo and his family.

Peter and Ester have destroyed Helga's will, having discovered that Helga left the running of restaurant to Nina. Stickan wants to cook the food for Helga's funeral service, but Calle is not convinced Stickan could manage. Nina and Calle reconcile, but Calle's infidelity gnaws at his conscience. Ragnarsson is found murdered and Angelo is the police's prime suspect. Gustaf is agonizing over whether or not he should to tell the congregation about his past. Britt has some news for Maggan.

Stockholm in May 1968. Nina and her daughter Christina prepare for the grand opening of the nightclub "Nina's". Peter and Ester, who run the nightclub Royal, feel threatened by the new competition. Christina tries to invite Calle to the opening. Calle has not seen or had any contact with Christina and Nina for many years. At the student union, Christina meets Maggan's son Uno and they both start socialising with the charismatic leftist student John Hansen. Maggan, now the Social Citizens Council, runs into an old friend.

Nina suspects Ester and Peter of being involved in the tear gas attack against Nina's nightclub. Nina's head chef has resigned and the kitchen staff are struggling. Gustaf try to persuade Nina to ask Calle to come back as head chef. Lilly talks Maggan into coming with her to an illegal gay club.

Calle is new head chef at Nina's and works to renew the menu. Meanwhile, Ester and Mirko make another attempt at sabotage. John and the leftist gang discover a new way to fund their business, upsetting Christina when she discovers the truth. John has begun to suspect that Uno is passing information to the secret police. The newspapers have found out that Maggan has visited an illegal gay club and the media hunt is fierce. Angelo gets a business idea.

Peter has realized that Ester and Mirko are responsible for the attacks on Nina's nightclub and decides to confront them. Money is disappearing from the tills at Nina's, leading to a conflict between Nina and Christina. John and the leftist gang plan to take their political struggle to a new level, but then John gets bombshell announcement from Christina. Angelo tries to get a bank loan to open his own pizzeria, and Maggan is facing a decision that will affect her entire future career.

Three years have passed since Christina left her mother and Nina's nightclub behind. She now lives in secret with John and the rest of the gang at a farmhouse. Uno, now a police officer, tries to track Christina down. Nina learns that she has a granddaughter and also tries to make contact with Christina. Gustaf and his family return from Tanzania, but the reason for coming home is not what everyone thinks. Calle suspects that Nina has started drinking again and is becoming increasingly worried. Maggan's life has changed dramatically since the City Hall press conference. Bellan has sunk deep into gambling addiction.

The night the elm trees are to be taken down in Kungsträdgården, there is a huge uproar. Uno and Maggan both get caught in the commotion, but they are on different sides. John and the leftist gang are planning an attack in central Stockholm, while Christina tries to uncover where they have taken her daughter. Nina discovers that something is seriously wrong with the economy at Nina's nightclub. Astrid continues to fight her leukemia, with Gustaf by her side.

John and the leftist gang are keeping Christina prisoner at the farm house. She tries to find an opportunity to escape, while Uno and the police are planning to move in on the farm. Nina's nightclub is near bankruptcy and Nina is starting to consider the offer from Mirko to buy her out. Or can she and Peter find a way to leave their differences behind and join forces? The difficult times for Nina's bring Nina and Calle closer together, but then Calle gets a very tempting offer from Angelo.

John has escaped the police. He contacts Christina and Moa-Li and wants them to run away to Spain with him. Uno, however, suspects something is going on. Peter is considering accepting the offer from his arch enemy Mirko. Nina, meanwhile, feels betrayed by Calle, having opened up her heart again. Astrid is on her deathbed and gives Gustaf her blessing - in more ways than one. Maggan receives a surprising offer from the highest authority.

Summer 1951. The Löwander family is preparing to open a summer restaurant on Gällnö in the Stockholm archipelago. Here Nina meets Calle again, for the first time since she tried to take her life.

Peter and the other staff prepare the midsummer celebration at the summer restaurant. Chef Backe has high hopes for the evening. Nina and Calle are colleagues, but beneath the surface deeper feelings burn.

Nina moves down to Erik and Christina in Skåne, but it will not be the harmonious reunion she hoped for. Helga suspects that something happened between Nina and Calle on Midsummer's Eve.

Calles and Sonja's marriage is cracking at the seams. In Skåne, Nina sinks deeper into depression. Helga and Backe try to save her. At the restaurant, the closing for the season is approaching.
