James Steel is determined to prove that this was a premeditated attack but Alesha Phillips and George Castle know that the jury's sympathy will lie with the law abiding perpetrator as opposed to the antisocial victim who refuses to take his medication.

DS Brooks and DS Devlin are called to investigate an unusual crime, a man has been attacked and had his kidney surgically removed. The team are horrified to learn that the stolen organ has been trafficked into the NHS and it has been transplanted into a very wealthy patient. With the case handed over to the CPS, a conflict of interests is soon apparent and James Steel finds himself in charge of the CPS as George Castle steps down from his post and dons his defence wig one final time.

She was about to go to university, she worked hard, and she wanted for nothing. So why did she do it? Debbie's death hits home for George Castle, and he pressures James and Alesha to bring all charges possible against the defendant. Not an easy case given that are no witnesses, all the evidence is circumstantial, and James' opponent is the brilliant but eccentric Jason Peters.

Ronnie agrees to help his old friend and partner, DS Jimmy Valentine in an undercover drug sting, but a gun is pulled and someone ends up dead. What appears to be a tragic mistake is then investigated by internal affairs, and DS Devlin fears Jimmy is not all he seems. As they push for the truth the spotlight turns on Ronnie and his dark past as a functioning alcoholic when a ten year old drug case was left with a large quantity of missing heroin. The evidence is stacking up and James and Alesha battle Valentine's barrister, Evelyn Wyndham to bring enough evidence to court, and Ronnie's the key... but Ronnie refuses to testify.

However, disturbing CCTV footage shows something completely different. Faced with conflicting stories and forensic evidence that is inconclusive, the CPS must decide how best justice is to be served.

When the body of a 16 year-old schoolgirl is found dead in her home in the middle of the afternoon, the investigating police cannot be sure a crime was even committed. With no forensic evidence and nothing to suggest the victim didn't die of natural causes, Matt and Ronnie question why they have been called out in the first place. However, the victim's mother is convinced her daughter was raped because she never slept naked. On further investigation, an unlikely murder weapon is uncovered and a likely suspect - someone with whom James Steel has a history. Determined the accused is guilty, James pursues him like a man possessed, pushing the boundaries of the law to the legal limit.

With this information and a photofit, Matt and Ronnie are quickly must identify the killer before they strike again. However, things take an unexpected turn when James Steel learns that the defendant charged with the crime has brilliant legal support, and James' only hope is to convince a deluded defendant to accept responsibility for his crimes.

With nothing but suspicions and unfounded rumours to go on, a murder charge cannot be brought against Nugent. Proclaiming his innocence, Mike points the finger at a well known East End gangster who he says he saw at the scene of the crime on the evening in question. The police are at odds as to who to believe. Trying the accused is no mean feat for James Steel, who is up against the eccentric defence barrister Jason Peters.

Attention turns to the ex-father-in-law, did he hunt down the father of his dying grandson to try to recoup the unpaid money or is there more to this family set up than first appears? At the CPS Jake and Kate try to work through their differences and reach a more even keel.

Although she initially denies killing her husband, Alison quickly changes her defence when the evidence stacks up against her. Her argument that she wasn't in her right mind and lost control when she stabbed him, challenges the prosecution, and Kate questions whether they should be trying her for murder at all.

It turns out that the man was Taylor Kane, a black undercover policeman who went missing in the 1980s during the Brixton riots. DI Leyton finds himself personally putting his head above the parapet when he gets an unexpected visit from the Commissioner. Accusations of are thrown around as our heroes get in deeper and deeper when the case hits the headlines, it's time to pick a side as loyalties are tested and careers are put on the line for justice.

The death of a seemingly innocent family man leads Ronnie and Joe to go on the hunt for the murderer, but they soon discover that the accused is Eddie Stewart, just so happens to be former DI Natalie Chandler's father. No one can understand why Eddie would commit murder, least of all Natalie who argues with a sympathetic Jake when she confronts him over the charge against her father. Natalie wastes no time in getting Ronnie to go above and beyond to help her find the real killer, even if that means getting him into trouble with a frustrated DI Leyton.

Although they are initially suspicious of a Dr. Elsayed who recently arrived in the country to visit Ranya. Although they can't find any evidence against him, Dr. Elsayed's medical history includes the practice of FGM, female genital mutilation, on young girls. Appalled by this, Kate struggles to remain professional and jeopardises her entire career leaving Jake to prosecute the case alone.
